Star Trek: DS9’s Worf & Dax Wedding: Shocking Absentees Revealed!
It’s not unexpected that certain characters didn’t attend Lieutenant Commanders Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jadzia Dax’s (Terry Farrell) wedding in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, given the quick planning of the ceremony due to Worf’s son, Alexander (Marc Worden), about to depart from the station for battle during the Dominion War. The series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in its sixth season, focuses solely on this wedding event in episode 7 titled “You Are Cordially Invited…”. Worf wants Alexander, who has recently reconciled with his father, to be his Tawi’Yan or best man at the ceremony.
As a passionate Star Trek fan, it’s not surprising that I find Worf’s determination to have a traditional Klingon wedding deeply resonant, given the backstory we uncover in “Family”, the second episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s fourth season. You see, Worf was brought up on Earth by my human parents, Sergey (Theodore Bikel) and Helena Rozhenko (Georgia Brown), after he was orphaned during the Khitomer Massacre. Struggling with his recent dishonor from the Klingon Empire, Worf felt his parents might not comprehend his choices. However, despite their limited understanding of Klingon culture, they’ve always nurtured Worf’s quest to embrace his roots because they deeply care about him—regardless of any honor or dishonor he may face.
Worf Didn’t Invite His Human Parents To His Star Trek: DS9 Wedding To Dax
There Were Many Good Reasons To Keep The Rozhenkos At Home
Despite reaching a reconciliation between Worf and the Rozhenkos, Worf chose not to extend an invitation to his human parents for his and Dax’s wedding in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The ongoing Dominion War made Deep Space Nine a dangerous location, making it unsafe for civilians like the Rozhenkos to travel there. Moreover, with only two weeks between Earth and DS9, it was impossible to arrange their arrival before the wedding due to the time constraints involved in space travel. Essentially, the Rozhenkos were unable to attend under similar circumstances as the USS Enterprise-E crew could not make it to Worf’s previous wedding.
On Worf’s wedding day, General Martok and his wife, Sirella, were also present. This was because Worf had become a part of the House of Martok during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s fifth season. Jadzia Dax tried to win over Sirella in hopes of joining the House of Martok as Worf’s bride, with Worf’s backing. Although Worf didn’t expect Sirella to be so critical of Jadzia as a Trill, it turned out to be beneficial that the Rozhenkos were not present at the wedding, as Sirella would have disliked them intensely.
Jadzia Dax Didn’t Invite Her Family To Her Wedding On DS9
Jadzia May Not Be That Close To Her Trill Family Members Anymore
In the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, it’s never revealed who Jadzia’s immediate family members are or what her family name was before she joined with Dax. Most of our knowledge about Trill family dynamics comes from Jadzia’s successor, Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer), particularly in season 7, episode 11, “Prodigal Daughter”. It’s fascinating to see how unlike her predecessor, Ezri is when she’s introduced to her mother and brothers. Their collective bewilderment hints at why many Trills tend to distance themselves from their original families.
If Jadzia’s relatives were accustomed to her being scholarly and introverted, they might find it startling to witness Jadzia Dax’s life as depicted in DS9. Her family might even express strong disapproval over her marrying Worf without any hint of Trill traditions in their Klingon ceremony. However, leaving relatives off the guest list isn’t uncommon for a Star Trek wedding since it can be challenging to accommodate those who could be light-years away. Fortunately, Worf and Dax had their fellow crew members from Deep Space Nine to share in their celebration instead.
