Lucky Day
In the fourth episode of Season 15, as Ruby Sunday reappeared in ‘Doctor Who‘, the series also introduced her new companion, Conrad. However, throughout “Lucky Day”, subtle hints suggested that Conrad was not entirely truthful. This misleading character appeared differently to both Ruby and the Fifteenth Doctor, ultimately leading to a disastrous assault on UNIT, putting at risk all their efforts to protect Earth.
Discovering that Conrad had been deceiving Ruby all along came as a surprise. Yet, by the final moments of the episode, it became clearer to see the subtle signs strewn about that hinted at Conrad being the story’s antagonist. It’s possible that the initial companion of the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who was innocent, but perhaps Conrad was merely overly cunning for his own detriment.
6. Conrad’s Mother
The Villain’s Parent Implied That He Always Lies
In the opening of “Lucky Day,” Dr. Who cautioned us against trusting Conrad. Although it was disheartening to witness the strained bond between young Conrad and his mother, as we later discovered his true motives, it became clear that perhaps he wasn’t as innocent as he initially appeared. In adulthood, Conrad deceived Ruby by claiming his mother had passed away, a lie that Shirley eventually exposed. When Conrad told his mother about encountering the TARDIS, meeting the Doctor, and taking fifty pence from him, she swiftly dismissed him.
It’s clear that this scene aimed to portray Conrad like the Boy Who Cried Wolf, leading viewers to believe he was actually telling the truth in the end. In some respects, Conrad’s tale resembled Elton from the Doctor-lite episode “Love and Monsters” in season 2, but their conclusions were vastly different. It’s possible that as a child, Conrad lied for a justifiable reason, but his behavior regarding dishonesty worsened significantly over time, possibly due to this specific encounter with his mother.
5. The Podcast Listener In UNIT HQ
Jordan Lang’s Presence Was A Hint
Ruby was easily fooled by Conrad’s deceit due to his cunning nature, and it’s clear that he wouldn’t have been nearly as effective without Jordan Lang, formerly of Doctor Who’s new UNIT team (but no longer associated). It struck me as strange when I noticed Lang tuning into Conrad’s podcast, given the organization’s usual secrecy, albeit with some exceptions. The identity of the Doctor wasn’t widely known outside of UNIT or select groups like Linda, so Lang’s interest in the podcast immediately aroused my suspicions.
It was disheartening to learn that one more of Kate’s employees turned out to be false, given Harriet Arbinger’s association with Sutekh in “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” the finale of Doctor Who season 14. Given UNIT’s reputation for quickly uncovering such deceit and their access to vast amounts of information, it was puzzling that they didn’t detect Lang’s treachery earlier. However, it’s possible that UNIT simply had an off day in this instance.
4. “You Tell A Good Story”
Conrad’s Remark To Ruby In The Café Suggested He Was Using Her
A particular tone in which Conrad said, “You tell a great story,” to Ruby sent shivers down my spine as we both sipped our coffee. As she shared about the alien she encountered a year ago, on the same day they first met, the café’s lights dimmed intermittently, casting an eerie shadow over the room. The unsettling ambiance made me think if Conrad was subconsciously trying to replicate the mysterious atmosphere from the final episode of ‘Doctor Who’ season 15.
Indeed, there was much more depth to his statement than initially met the eye. In essence, Conrad suspected that not only did people like Ruby, but also UNIT, had been fabricating events. To Conrad, each alien encounter, every invasion, and all global calamities attributed to extraterrestrials were mere inventions. In a roundabout way, this remark could be seen as a subtle compliment to Ruby. After all, Conrad demonstrated his ingenuity and creativity by orchestrating the Shreeks in the village. Even though he doubted Ruby’s honesty, he admired her knack for spinning captivating tales about them.
3. No Antidote Scene
We Never Saw Conrad Take The Solution Ruby Gave Him
The circumstance where Ruby handed the antidote to Conrad, yet we didn’t observe him using it, raised a major concern for me. Granted, this event might have happened off-camera, but why would Doctor Who choose to conceal whether or not Conrad used the antidote? It seemed reasonable that the omission of this scene implied that the pheromones remained in his body. The lack of a scene showing Conrad consuming the antidote was strong evidence for me that he didn’t. However, this led me to wonder why not.
If Conrad wasn’t plotting something, he likely would have drank the liquid on the spot while having coffee with Ruby. Even with the warning of needing eight hours of deep sleep afterwards, if I were Conrad, the antidote would be quickly consumed before Ruby finished speaking. But once I discovered the truth, it became clear. Conrad hadn’t genuinely believed in the existence of Shreek all along. However, to maintain his deception towards Ruby, he had to fib about this as well, or else he would have instantly lost her faith in him.
2. The Taxi
A Local Cab’s Lights Flickered As Ruby And Conrad Passed It
As Ruby’s initial date with Conrad drew to a close, it became clear that something wasn’t quite right about the newcomer. During their stroll down the street following dinner, they walked past a traditional London taxi, and the interior lights began to pulse intermittently. Remarkably, nearby street lamps stayed constant, but this discrepancy wasn’t lost on Ruby, who had previously mentioned that flickering lights were one of the Shreek’s defining features. However, it seemed only the viewers managed to pick up on this detail at such a critical juncture.
Given Ruby’s proximity to the taxi incident – almost close enough to touch – I found it somewhat surprising that her companion didn’t notice it, even peripherally. This seemed particularly unusual considering “Lucky Day” had shown how Ruby had evolved since Doctor Who season 14, and given her ongoing trauma from her past journeys with the Doctor. However, considering she was deeply involved in her discussion with Conrad, someone she believed she could finally confide in, it was reasonable that she might have been distracted.
1. Sparky’s Disappearance
Conrad’s Electrician Friend Vanished Moments Before The Pub’s Lights Start Playing Up
I became wary upon encountering Sparky, Conrad’s friend, in “Lucky Day.” Even before Sparky’s Electrics hat was visible, the revelation that they met while having Conrad’s kitchen rewired piqued my curiosity. Therefore, it didn’t surprise me when Sparky mysteriously disappeared from the idyllic country pub, followed swiftly by the lights starting to flicker. For a brief instant, I assumed that Conrad’s friends were acting independently. It seemed plausible that long-time friends might prank a fellow group member, particularly when introducing their new partner.
It seemed quite plausible to me that Sparky and the gang were just playing a trick on Conrad due to his podcast, aiming to frighten him into believing a genuine alien invasion from “Doctor Who” was underway on Earth. Given that Conrad had met Ruby through the podcast, this explanation appeared even more likely. Regrettably, it turned out differently; instead, “Doctor Who” dealt a blow to Ruby’s feelings and exposed Conrad as an unexpected danger not just to UNIT, but potentially the world at large.
