Sydney Sweeney’s Met Gala Look Pays Tribute to Kim Novak’s Iconic Style

2025’s Met Gala saw actress Sydney Sweeney gracefully stepping onto the red carpet on Monday night, donning a shimmering black Miu Miu dress inspired by the iconic style of ‘Vertigo’ actress Kim Novak.

Sweeney’s dress resembles a notable one from the past, featuring a circular neckline like the one Novak donned in Robert Aldrich’s 1967 film “The Legend of Lylah Clare.” In that movie, Novak was emulating a glittering dress and brooch similar to those worn by Joan Crawford in the 1937 film “The Bride Wore Red.” Back then, she was mirroring Crawford’s style.

Sweeney hinted at future events by sharing a photo of Novak on her Instagram stories. She will portray Novak in the upcoming drama titled “Scandalous“, which is Colman Domingo’s directorial debut. This film, set in the 1950s, revolves around an affair between Novak and singer Sammy Davis Jr., during the Jim Crow era.

2025’s Met Gala honors the launch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume exhibition focusing on Black dandyism, with Davis being hailed as a living representation of this style.

Davis and Novak crossed paths on “The Steve Allen Show,” both making appearances as guests. Davis, captivated by Novak, went to the set of “Vertigo” and proposed photographing her. As per Laurence Leamer’s latest book “Hitchcock’s Blondes,” Davis asked while filming close-ups, “‘Have you ever considered removing the lens cover?’

According to TIME, Harry Cohn, the boss at Columbia Pictures, ended the relationship between Sammy Davis Jr. and Kim Novak by having a goon warn Sammy that there would be trouble coming his way. This was because Cohn was concerned that cinemas would refuse to screen a movie featuring a white actress dating a Black man.

In 1958, Davis tied the knot with chorus girl Loray White, while Novak exchanged vows with actor Richard Johnson in 1965.
