Wormtongue’s Big Mistake That Sealed His Doom in Lord of the Rings
In my opinion, as I sat in the cinema watching Peter Jackson’s masterpiece, “The Two Towers,” I found myself deeply moved by King Théoden’s plight. Though he maintained his title as ruler of Rohan, it was clear that Saruman’s dark magic had left him a mere puppet, with Gríma Wormtongue pulling the strings.
Wormtongue, this treacherous advisor, manipulated Théoden’s melancholic state to advance Saruman’s sinister plan of conquering Rohan and Middle-earth. He cleverly convinced the king that the Orcs and Dunlendings wreaking havoc in their kingdom were not a threat. Moreover, he seized this opportunity to eliminate those who displeased him, with poor Éomer, Théoden’s nephew, becoming his primary target due to his keen insight into Wormtongue’s deceitful schemes.
Following a heated altercation between them, Wormtongue expelled Éomer from Rohan under the threat of execution. In the extended version of the movie, Éomer contested this by stating that an advisor lacked the power for such action. With a smug response, Wormtongue retorted, “This command is not mine. It’s from the king; he signed it this morning.” He then displayed a written decree bearing Théoden’s messy signature and a royal seal. Two Rohirrim escorted Éomer away as he protested angrily. Although Wormtongue managed to get rid of Éomer temporarily, his decision ultimately turned out to be disastrous in the long run. Like many villains in The Lord of the Rings, Wormtongue made a mistake that eventually led to his own demise.
The Rohirrim Befriended the Former Members of the Fellowship
- Rohan’s territory stretched to the river Limlight in the north, the river Anduin in the east, the White Mountains in the south, and .
Éomer didn’t face his exile alone; a group of loyal Rohirrim soldiers accompanied him, either due to their own conflicts with Wormtongue or because they stood by Éomer. This shows the strong leadership that Éomer possessed, as even after his banishment, the Riders of Rohan chose to follow him. Although Éomer distanced himself from Edoras, the capital city, he didn’t abandon Rohan entirely; instead, he continued to guard the kingdom against Orcs and other threats within its borders. It was during this period of exile that Éomer and his fellow Rohirrim engaged in combat with Uglúk’s band of Uruk-hai.
Without the Rohirrim knowing it, this assault provided Merry and Pippin an opportunity to escape from the grasp of the Uruk-hai, finding relative safety in Fangorn. Later on, Éomer and his comrades encountered Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli who were chasing the Uruk-hai in a bid to find the hobbits. Initially, there was some friction between them, but they soon recognized that they shared the same goals. Éomer shared Rohan’s predicament with the trio: “Saruman has corrupted the king’s mind and lays claim to these lands as his own. My men remain loyal to Rohan.” Eventually, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli made their way to Fangorn where they joined forces with Gandalf and learned about what had transpired. Subsequently, they journeyed to Rohan to assist Éomer’s people.
Éomer Foiled Saruman and Wormtongue’s Wicked Schemes Three Times
In their arrival at Edoras, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli repelled Wormtongue’s followers, allowing Gandalf to break Saruman’s enchantment on Théoden. Once Théoden regained consciousness, he promptly evicted Wormtongue from Meduseld, declaring, “Enough blood has been shed because of him.” It was Wormtongue’s banishment of Éomer that potentially brought the heroes into Rohan’s affairs, for they would have otherwise been pursuing the Uruk-hai.
Éomer’s exile had far-reaching consequences that negatively impacted Wormtongue. When he lost hold over the king, Saruman decided to launch a massive attack on Helm’s Deep with Uruk-hai forces. The Rohirrim were struggling against heavy odds, but they received a critical boost when Éomer and his banished Riders of Rohan arrived unexpectedly from the east, outflanking the Uruk-hai. This strategic move would not have been possible if they had initially been within Helm’s Deep with their allies. Furthermore, Éomer’s exile played a significant role in Merry and Pippin slipping away from the Uruk-hai, which eventually enabled them to persuade Treebeard. In the aftermath of the Battle of Helm’s Deep and the Last March of the Ents, Wormtongue faced his demise at the hands of Legolas’ arrow.
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” novel, there were minor differences in the sequence of events. Unlike original portrayals, Éomer encountered Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli before his confrontation with Wormtongue. Instead of banishing him, Wormtongue imprisoned Éomer within Edoras. This change allowed Éomer to participate in the Battle of Helm’s Deep, with another character leading the reinforcements that ultimately turned the tide. However, even in Tolkien’s version, Wormtongue’s fate was sealed. Despite being given opportunities for redemption, he continued to side with Saruman, eventually paying the price for his treachery with his life.
