David Lee Roth returns to the stage amid Van Halen drama
Diamond Dave is back in the live business.
On the weekend, David Lee Roth returned to public performances after over five years, headlining at the M3 music festival in Columbia, Maryland. As reported by Rolling Stone, his setlist primarily consisted of classic hits from his former band Van Halen. Accompanying him were guitarist Al Estrada and four backup vocalists.
As a die-hard classic rock fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I recount my recent experience at a concert where Eddie Van Halen’s former bandmate, David Lee Roth, took center stage. At the ripe age of 70, he kicked off the show with the electrifying “Panama,” and from there, it was one hit after another. We danced to “You Really Got Me” and “Dance the Night Away.” The energy soared during “Runnin’ with the Devil,” and tears welled up as we reminisced to “Jamie’s Cryin’.” The crowd erupted in cheers for “Hot for Teacher.” And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, he closed the show with the chart-topping classic, “Jump.” What a night!
Music
Prior to performing at Stagecoach, the ex-lead singer of Van Halen shares the backstories of six of his compositions.
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, during his performance, Roth humorously stated that the show signaled “the end of my first retirement” – this was a nod to his late 2021 declaration that he was retiring due to undisclosed health concerns. Interestingly, Ticketmaster has now posted over a dozen upcoming concerts by Roth, starting July 22 at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles.
Roth’s last performance prior to Saturday’s event was a private concert held for Home Depot in 2023, as reported by Rolling Stone; before this, he was the opening act for Kiss during a tour that concluded in March 2020 due to numerous cancellations and postponements resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The singer had planned a residency in Las Vegas early in 2022, but these shows were ultimately cancelled before they took place.
On Saturday, Sammy Hagar, who took over as the lead vocalist for Van Halen from Roth back in 1985, made some comments about the band, following the death of their founding guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, in 2020.

On the third day of the grand country music festival held in Indio, performers such as Luke Combs, the Backstreet Boys, Sammy Hagar, and the Goo Goo Dolls all took the stage.
Last month, prior to Hagar’s performance at the Stagecoach festival in Indio, Hagar shared with The Times that he and Eddie (Van Halen) had previously discussed a potential reunion, but that Eddie requested Hagar not to disclose their plans to Eddie’s brother, Alex Van Halen, who plays drums for Van Halen.
Later on, Hagar shared with Rolling Stone that he believes Alex may be resentful towards him due to the reason “I’m still performing… and he isn’t.” Following his appearance at Stagecoach, Hagar started a residency at Park MGM in Las Vegas.
The last concert by Van Halen occurred in October 2015 at the Hollywood Bowl, which was one of two shows in their home city of Los Angeles, marking the end of a tour during which David Lee Roth handled vocals and Wolf Van Halen, Eddie’s son, played the bass.
