Florence Pugh’s Notting Hill Re-Enactment Has Rom-Com Fans Freaking Out

Florence Pugh recently recreated a memorable scene from one of Julia Robert’s iconic romantic comedies. This reenactment of the “Notting Hill” moment took place during the promotional tour for her new Marvel Studios film.

Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts*, seized the moment to reenact the scene where Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) conversed with Will Thacker (Hugh Grant) about her upcoming film. He wrote on social media, “I’m usually shy at press conferences, and Notting Hill events aren’t my forte, so I asked Florence Pugh to re-enact Notting Hill with me during the Thunderbolts* press day.” Had Lewis/Sebastian/Wyatt/David not departed for the day, she would have had a more capable acting partner.

In the classic scene from Notting Hill, Roberts’ character invites Grant’s character to meet her at The Ritz Hotel. However, he is mistaken for a journalist and escorted to a press conference for her latest film. Pretending to be a writer for Horses & Hound magazine, he creates a humorous situation when Thacker asks: “I quite liked the movie. I was just curious, had you ever thought about including more horses in it?“.

Schreier and Pugh playfully recreated a scene for their “Thunderbolts” promotional tour, where Pugh takes on her character once more. This movie hit the big screen on May 2, marking the end of Phase Five in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film has already been praised by critics and has earned over $160 million at the box office.

Despite not being a typical romantic comedy, “Thunderbolts” offers uproarious moments, especially when its creative team veers away from traditional serious promotions to pay tribute to one of the classics. In the final video snippet, both Pugh and Schreier struggle to keep their laughter at bay, with Schreier demonstrating unexpected acting skills by maintaining a straight face while reciting lines from the “Notting Hill” scene.

Thunderbolts* Tackles Important Depictions of Mental Health Challenges

One aspect that both critics and enthusiasts agree on is Thunderbolts’ unique blend of comedy (such as the amusing press stunts by Pugh and Schreier) with deeper, more substantial themes. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has historically infused fun into its characters and utilized their comedic aspects, but Thunderbolts elevates this trend while simultaneously providing its main heroes an opportunity to grapple with weighty issues like depression and mental health struggles.

For Pugh, this was an exceptionally significant deal, as she referred to it as a “huge” one. She emphasized that the theme of the movie was crafted with a budget usually reserved for Marvel productions, and they considered it important enough to be the central focus. This aspect is crucial, incredibly crucial in today’s context, she explained. Schreier made sure these challenges were portrayed prominently in the film, stating that such themes are no longer niche but rather universal ideas that we all relate to.
