Guy Ritchie reunites with Jake Gyllenhaal for sequel to hit streaming remake

Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie will team up on the sequel to streaming hit Road House for Amazon.

In a recent shift, Ritchie is now directing in place of Doug Liman, who initially directed the original “Road House” film, for movies such as Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” and Paramount+’s “MobLand”.

2018’s “Road House” features Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of former UFC athlete-turned-security-enforcer, Elwood Dalton, a character originally played by Patrick Swayze in the 1989 film.

In order to get by financially, Dalton accepts employment at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, owned by Frankie (portrayed by Jessica Williams). He finds himself entangled in criminal feuds and surrounded by an array of intriguing personalities.

Initially, the initial movie received both positive and negative feedback, yet it proved to be an extraordinary triumph for Amazon Prime Video. In fact, it became the most-viewed original film ever created by the streaming platform during the previous year, as it attracted more than 50 million viewers in just its first two weekends.

The follow-up sees Gyllenhaal and Ritchie reunite after Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant and In the Grey.

The writer, Will Beall (known for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”), is currently working on the script for a forthcoming sequel. At present, specifics about the storyline are being kept confidential.

As a dedicated fan, I’m sharing the update that Ritchie has stepped in for Liman, who had earlier expressed his dismay over Road House not making it to the big screen. Unfortunately, following MGM’s acquisition by Amazon, the film will bypass cinemas and head directly to streaming platforms instead.

As a movie enthusiast, I penned down my thoughts on Deadline: If we continue to bypass showing tentpole films in cinemas, the future of movie theaters might be at stake.

If we don’t have movie theaters, we won’t see the blockbuster films that serve as a financial foundation for studios to invest in unique movies and fresh talent. In essence, without movie theaters, we won’t have movie stars.
