YOU WON’T BELIEVE What Song Ellie Sings In The Last Of Us Season 2
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 4.
In The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4, Ellie performs a song for Dina. This heartfelt scene resonates with Joel and the game’s original storyline. Following their arrival in Seattle in the previous week’s episode, this installment finds Ellie and Dina on a mission to locate Abby and the Wolves. Spotting a W.L.F. symbol near a television station, they decide to bide their time until nightfall before sneaking in for an ambush. As they wait for darkness, they seek refuge in an empty music store.
In the heart of the cinematic scene unfolds, as I, a passionate cinephile, bear witness to Ellie discovering a well-preserved guitar. With fingers nimble and eyes gleaming, she strums a melody that echoes through the air. Dina enters the room, captivated by this impromptu performance, her expression hinting at profound emotion.
This enchanting moment on screen mirrors a strikingly similar sequence from The Last of Us Part II, even down to the song selection. Ellie’s melody resonates deeply with Joel’s memory, serving as a poignant callback not only to the game but also to the initial season of the series.
Ellie Plays & Sings A-Ha’s “Take On Me” For Dina In The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 4
The Scene Is Ripped Straight From The Video Game
In the gripping fourth episode of The Last of Us season 2, I found myself moved by a captivating acoustic cover of a-ha’s “Take on Me” played by Ellie. This scene, mirroring the original game so closely, was a testament to the meticulous attention to detail in its adaptation.
In the game, this moment might have been easy to overlook, as it required intentional exploration away from the main storyline to discover. However, that detour was richly rewarded, making the encounter all the more meaningful. Interestingly enough, “Take on Me” had already made an appearance in The Last of Us season 1, serving as a poignant backdrop for Ellie and Riley’s wanderings through the mall, setting the stage for its reprisal in season 2.
In the game, Ellie begins to play Pearl Jam’s “Future Days,” a song that Joel initially played for her and likely taught her, but she stops as Dina enters and it seems she isn’t ready to discuss Joel just yet. This part is omitted in the TV show, as it also skips Joel’s performance of “Future Days” (and because in the series timeline, Ellie appears more open about Joel at this stage). However, the TV scene retains a link to Joel nonetheless.
After she’s done playing and Dina praises her skills, Ellie acknowledges that all the lessons Joel had given her were worth it. Earlier in the series, it was suggested that Joel showed Ellie how to play guitar when he helped fix her instrument in the first episode. This “Take on Me” performance is the first clear indication that yes, Joel did teach Ellie not just how to play, but also taught her exceptionally well.
Why “Take On Me” Is So Important To Ellie & Her Relationship With Joel
Every Time Ellie Picks Up A Guitar, She’s Reminded Of Joel
Ellie’s rendition of “Take on Me” resonates deeply with her relationship with Joel, as it was guitar lessons he imparted that allowed her to play the song. With each strum, Ellie recalls Joel, and now, following his sudden and sorrowful demise, those memories are what remain. Moved to tears by Ellie’s performance, Dina also finds herself reflecting on Joel, simply from listening to the guitar strings being played.
In both the game and the series, this is the unique instance where Ellie appears joyful and hopeful following Joel’s demise. For a brief moment, she found solace in the enchantment of music. The lyrics subtly suggest Ellie’s blossoming romance with Dina – “I’ll be coming for your love, okay” – foreshadowing their relationship development later in the episode. Music holds significant weight in ‘The Last of Us’, and as Ellie can now create her own music (with the memories of Joel attached to it), its importance is about to escalate even further.
