Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Outsmarts Suicide Squad With Unexpected Twists and Deeper Drama
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, “The Unstoppable Team” undeniably shares certain traits with two other iconic superhero ensembles, often being labeled as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s counterpart to DC’s Suicide Squad. Yet, Director Jake Schreier emphasizes that this team harbors unique distinctions that set them apart from their similarly-minded counterparts in the comic book world.
While talking to CBR during the movie promotion, Schreier emphasized that, even though some similarities exist, the latest Marvel team stands apart from other questionable groups due to their unique backgrounds.
The focus is on us regular folks who felt destined for greater things but didn’t quite make it happen. Once you’ve encountered such a setback, what’s the next step? How do you navigate through this situation and find your path out of it? Additionally, the Thunderbolts don’t share the same objectives; they unite eventually, but not under any compulsion like Amanda Waller’s control. Instead, their cooperation is voluntary.
Initially, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine assigns them missions to fight each other instead of forming a covert team for black ops. This immediately sets it apart, allowing us to explore deeper, internal character aspects rather than focusing on external conflicts, creating a unique angle where we can delve into personal struggles rather than external ones.
‘Thunderbolts*’ Has Taken on ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘
It seems that when it comes to team-ups in superhero films, having more characters often leads to greater success. Although some standalone Marvel and DC movies have fallen short for various viewers, the Avengers films, Guardians of the Galaxy, and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have been among the highest-acclaimed superhero movies ever made. Now, Thunderbolts is set to continue this trend by introducing another group of surprising collaborators that both audiences and critics can appreciate.
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is a fictional team in Marvel Comics, so it’s important to mention this for clarity in the context of superhero movies.
Following a high point of approximately 97%, the Tomatometer rating for Thunderbolts slightly dipped to its current standing of 88%. Nevertheless, the film continues to captivate audiences and boasts a remarkable 95% audience approval score. This score surpasses all three Guardians films, Suicide Squad, and even the Avengers series, which is quite an accomplishment given the recent output from Marvel Studios and DC content by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Despite all the buzz surrounding The Fantastic Four: First Steps, this movie is being overshadowed by an unexpected contender, Thunderbolts*. While many view it as a chance to rectify the mistakes of the 2015’s Fantastic Four and advance the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) towards its groundbreaking multiverse-shattering Avengers films, some critics have praised Thunderbolts* as a refreshing change from the typical comic book movie formula that the franchise is often criticized for producing. In fact, not only does it surpass expectations, but its final act even flips convention on its head, making it one of the most acclaimed MCU films in recent years. However, whether this critical success will translate into strong box office returns remains to be seen as we await the movie’s full performance in the coming weeks.
