Thunderbolts Just Killed an Amazing MCU Theory About Avengers Tower!

As a movie critic, I must confess my dismay at the unveiling in “Thunderbolts” concerning the Avengers Tower. The speculation surrounding its ownership had been building ever since Tony Stark parted ways with it in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”. This enigma has cast a shadow over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fueling theories that hinted at fascinating Marvel characters as potential new owners. Yet, the big reveal in “Thunderbolts” fell flat for me – it was less than satisfying, leaving me yearning for a more compelling twist.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the building initially known as Stark Tower later became known as Avengers Tower. This iconic structure symbolized innovation and bravery throughout the MCU storyline. The tower first appeared in the 2012 movie “The Avengers,” serving as the team’s headquarters before they moved to the Avengers Compound in upstate New York. Tony Stark sold the tower prior to “Homecoming,” setting up an intriguing question that continued over time. Marvel deliberately kept the identity of the new owner a secret, allowing fans to speculate and fill in the gaps – something Marvel understood its audience enjoys without immediately revealing clear answers.

The Avengers Tower’s New Owner Has Been Subject To Intense Speculation

Given the strong associations between the Avengers Tower and both the Avengers and Stark Industries, many fans have speculated for quite some time that it would be instrumental in launching a fresh era within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of the earliest – and most widely accepted – assumptions was that Norman Osborn had acquired the tower to establish Oscorp as its headquarters. The joint venture between Marvel Studios and Sony, which brought Spider-Man into the mix, made this possibility seem more likely, and the idea of a towering Oscorp over New York City instilled a sense of looming peril that resonated with the franchise’s characteristic tone.

A frequently discussed idea was that Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four acquired the tower, which paved the way for their anticipated appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The building’s renowned status made it a fitting substitute for the Baxter Building, providing the Fantastic Four with an operational base that was already aligned with the visual style of the MCU. Moreover, theories about Kang also emerged.

After the release of Endgame, discussions revolved around time travel and alternate realities leading some fans to speculate that a character like Kang (either Immortus or Rama-Tut) might have obtained the tower with ulterior motives to control Earth’s superheroes as part of his broader scheme. It would have been quite dramatic, linking Stark’s legacy to the main danger in the multiverse. These theories presented exciting narrative possibilities. However, what was actually revealed seems more like a reused concept rather than a significant progression in the storyline.

Thunderbolts* Revealed That Valentina Allegra de Fontaine Bought The Avengers Tower

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In the movie “Thunderbolts”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, acquired an old tower and transformed it into the cutting-edge “Watchtower”. This high-tech base is now home to her government-supported squad of anti-heroes. In the film, this Watchtower serves as the New Avengers’ new headquarters.

It’s not always a negative progression – Val has been subtly growing in power behind the scenes of the MCU, gathering characters such as Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, and Taskmaster. Establishing a central base for her character fits well with the storyline. But, the choice to make that base the old Avengers Tower seems like Marvel is restarting things from scratch. Essentially, the building has transitioned from being the Avengers’ headquarters, back to being their headquarters, but this time with a new, ethically ambiguous team occupying it.

I’m Disappointed This MCU Theory About Avengers Tower Was Debunked

Although the unveiling seems logical on a theoretical level, it falls short as an outcome for a mystery that’s been hinted at for close to a decade. Fans had been led to anticipate that the tower’s new proprietor would be a significant figure connected to the multiverse narrative or the introduction of fresh iconic characters. However, the disclosure comes across as underwhelming and overly mundane, given the post-Endgame era in which the MCU has been expanding its cosmic and multiversal dimensions.

The most disappointing aspect of this revelation lies in limiting the scope for creative explorations. If Oscorp had taken over the tower, Norman Osborn could have been introduced as a powerful corporate antagonist simultaneously. This would have provided an engaging means to introduce the iconic Spider-Man villain, whose schemes could have reshaped the entire franchise. However, after Thunderbolts, everything seems to be back in its original state.
