10 Terrifying Final Destination Fears You’ll Never Forget
The “Final Destination” series of films is known for its inventive, outrageous, and decidedly off-kilter character deaths. Compared to other horror movie franchises, “Final Destination” earns bonus points due to its intricate plotlines that keep viewers on the edge of their seats with anticipation. In 2023, New Line Cinema is set to launch a sixth installment in the series called “Final Destination: Bloodlines“. This new movie is sure to instill an entirely novel set of apprehensions in young audiences.
Regardless of whether the latest movie is great or not, it’s the individual deaths in a ‘Final Destination’ film that leave a lasting impression. While these movies may not be consistently terrifying overall, they do tap into some universal fears that many people might find unsettling without having seen them. Additionally, they introduce specific, unusual scenarios that could potentially cause anxiety, which are unique to the beloved (and somewhat stressful) ‘Final Destination’ horror series.
Here are the 10 biggest fears the Final Destination movies have instilled in us forever.
10
Pool Drains
In the movie “Final Destination 4”, character Nick O’Bannon, portrayed by Bobby Campo, successfully prevents a tragic accident at a racetrack and saves his friends. Regrettably, one of those friends encounters an equally grim second chance at death. Specifically, Hunt Wynorski, played by Nick Zano, is relaxing at a country club pool when he takes someone’s water gun, leaving it close to a switch controlling the pool drainage system.
Don’t Go in the Water
When Hunt dives into the pool to retrieve his lucky coin, things take a turn for the worse. He becomes trapped, and the force of the water drainage pulls him apart, expelling his organs through the pump. Although the movie hasn’t discouraged people from swimming entirely, it has certainly influenced how viewers perceive swimming pools. Many fans now avoid the drainage system when they swim, viewing Hunt’s death as one of the goriest in the series. It appears that aquatic horror continues to captivate audiences.

The Number 180
The movie titled “Final Destination” was the one that ignited the series. In this film, Alex Browning (played by Devon Sawa) and his fellow high school students were all set to embark on a flight to France. Full of anticipation, they boarded Flight 180. However, before takeoff, Alex had a premonition that the plane would explode in mid-air. Consequently, he advised everyone to leave or be removed from the flight. Tragically, the plane indeed exploded shortly after taking off, exactly as Alex had foreseen.
A Traveling Omen
In my opinion, even after all these years, the ominous number 180 from the “Final Destination” series continues to send shivers down the spines of its devoted fans. This eerie number is a recurring theme throughout the franchise, showing up on highway mile markers, seat numbers at racing tracks, and even the name of a consulting firm. There have been countless theories among fans about the symbolic meaning behind this number, but the overall feeling remains consistent: 180 signifies danger. Needless to say, when this number appears during travel arrangements, it’s not exactly a welcome sight for “Final Destination” enthusiasts.

Roller Coasters
In Final Destination 3, the story unfolds at a thrilling amusement park. Here, Wendy Christensen (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) experiences a chilling premonition about a roller coaster malfunction. Consequently, she warns her friends to avoid this ride. As it turns out, the roller coaster indeed derails. By speaking up, Wendy manages to protect her companions from immediate danger…but only temporarily.
Amusement Park Nightmare
As a cinema enthusiast, I can confidently say that before watching Final Destination 3, many folks might have been apprehensive about roller coasters. However, this film didn’t exactly alleviate those fears. The shaky, unpredictable nature of amusement park rides doesn’t help the cause either. Roller coasters are supposed to provide a thrill, but after seeing this movie, they seem more terrifying than exhilarating.
7
Lawnmowers
In the thrilling world of movie-watching, I can’t help but notice that lawnmowers seem to make an appearance more than once in the chilling series known as “Final Destination.” Interestingly enough, there’s one appearing in the upcoming film “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” but it was the ride-on lawnmower in “Final Destination 4” that set off the deadly chain of events. The character Samantha Lane (played by Krista Allen) manages to survive the catastrophic McKinley Speedway crash foreseen by Nick O’Bannon (Bobby Campo), but her luck runs out later in the film during a visit to the hair salon, where she met an untimely end.
The Guy on the Lawnmower Doesn’t Even Notice
As Samantha is about to leave, a lawnmower unexpectedly approaches, sending a stone flying. This stone managed to pass through the exhaust pipe of the lawnmower and, in an instant, struck Samantha’s eye, proving fatal. The seemingly ordinary sight of a lawnmower took on a terrifying new aspect for Samantha, as it became clear that debris could unexpectedly be ejected from beneath such machines.
6
Slipping in the Shower
In the movie “Final Destination”, Alex saves some friends from a plane crash, including Tod Waggner (played by Chad Donella). However, Tod has mixed emotions about surviving, as it was his brother George (portrayed by Brendan Fehr) who urged him to check on Alex after being kicked off the flight. This act of checking on Alex saved Tod’s life, but unfortunately, George perished in the explosion. Sadly, Tod doesn’t live much longer; he is the first survivor visited by death.
Why People Don’t Like Clotheslines in the Bathroom
In this scene, Tod finds himself singularly in the bathroom. As he unintentionally slips on a slippery floor, he becomes ensnared in a clothesline suspended over the bathtub. Unable to free himself due to his feet slipping on shampoo residue, the pressure of the clothesline gradually chokes him. The unsettling image of Tod’s feet slipping around in the tub has left an indelible mark on viewers, despite the fact that he wasn’t actually taking a shower during this sequence.
5
Loose Shards of Glass
The movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines” revolves around a family reunion that takes a tragic turn, leaving survivors to delve deep into their ancestry for answers. Just the trailer has left viewers squirming, particularly due to the editing of scenes. A broken shard of glass plays a significant role and is likely to cause harm.
Hiding in Plain Sight
In the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines”, there’s a knack for subtly placing potential hazards such as rusty nails or shards of glass, only for characters to encounter them later on, adding to the suspense. At a family barbecue, broken glass seems to have a mind of its own; it’s in the ice cubes, then someone’s drink, and even lurks hidden in the grass, just waiting for an unaware foot. The way these hazards are shown to the audience before the characters experience them heightens the tension significantly, making viewers likely to scrutinize their own ice-filled beverages more carefully after watching this film.
4
Garbage Disposals
In “Final Destination 2”, college student Kimberly Corman (A. J. Cook) has a premonition that saves many from a traffic accident on Route 23, among them lottery winner Evan Lewis (David Paetkau). Regrettably, Evan’s good fortune doesn’t endure. He becomes the second survivor to perish after the crash, and his death scene is intricately designed with misleading incidents. A series of mishaps occur, such as accidentally dropping a fridge magnet into the microwave and getting his hand trapped while fishing for a ring that fell down the drain, which eventually lead to a fire in his apartment. He escapes via the fire escape, but unfortunately, the ladder collapses upon landing, piercing his skull and eye.
One of the Most Effective Fake-Outs
Occasionally, a film scene can startle viewers even when there’s no actual danger involved. This certainly applies to the garbage disposal scene in the movie. When Evan reaches into the disposal while searching for his ring, it’s the kind of false alarm that makes you wince. The thought of the blades starting up and mutilating his hand is intensely unsettling. After seeing this movie, many viewers think twice before sticking their hand down the kitchen sink drain.
3
Elevators
In the movie “Final Destination 2”, characters Nora Carpenter (played by Lynda Boyd) and her son Tim (James Kirk) are miraculously spared from a road accident on Highway 23 due to Kimberly’s premonition. Later, it is Tim who meets his end at a dentist appointment, leaving Nora devastated. However, it is Nora’s tragic demise that stands out most vividly in the minds of viewers.
Can You Hold the Elevator?
Following a gathering where survivors deliberate on current events, a somber Nora departs via the elevator. A man equipped with a box of prosthetics and hooks is waiting in the elevator behind her, and she fails to notice as one of those hooks snags in her hair. Subsequently, Nora gets a call warning that death approaches her imminently, causing her to frantically attempt to exit the elevator. Tragically, with her head still trapped within, the doors close around her neck, resulting in her decapitation. This harrowing scene has left a lasting impact on viewers, and many spectators continue to be wary of sticking any body part near an elevator door due to this chilling incident.
2
Tanning Beds
In the movie Final Destination 3, Wendy successfully persuades most of her companions to avoid boarding the roller coaster, thereby sparing their lives. However, every die-hard Final Destination fan understands that this was merely the start of their ordeal. They may have escaped the initial catastrophic accident, but Wendy and her friends were certainly not out of Death’s reach; it was only a matter of time before Death came to claim them.
Burning Up at the Salon
In 2006, tanning beds were a common trend among teenagers, a fact that this movie exploits. Following their survival from a roller coaster accident, friends Ashlyn Halperin (portrayed by Crystal Lowe) and Ashley Freund (played by Chelan Simmons) decide to visit a tanning salon together. Tragically, their tanning beds malfunction, causing them both to suffer gruesome deaths by burning alive. Their skin sheds off, and their goggles stick to their eyes – an image that remains disturbing for many viewers even today. This harrowing scene is often cited as the reason people avoid using tanning salons.
1
Logging Trucks
In the opening scene of “Final Destination 2”, a tragic accident occurs on a bustling highway. Kimberly foresees a multi-car pileup, where a log falls from a logging vehicle, shattering the windscreen of a car and instantly claiming the driver’s life. This unfortunate event sparks a chain reaction that leads to the demise of everyone on the road. There are some gruesome instances in this sequence, but that logging truck has become notorious.
This Scene Made Everyone Afraid of Trucks
One common reference point across all the Final Destination movies is undeniably the logging truck accident scene from Final Destination 2. While it may not be the bloodiest, its impact is undeniable and enduring. It’s a situation many can relate to – getting stuck behind a heavily loaded truck on the road. There’s an inescapable, unsettling quality about it that resonates with viewers. In fact, even those unfamiliar with the Final Destination series have likely heard of this sequence.
