Six Power Rangers Villains Who Almost Killed the Team!
Instead of being easily defeated in a single episode like many other Power Rangers foes, some villains demonstrated enough skill to come close to defeating the heroes. To distinguish between Power Rangers antagonists, we need to differentiate between the routine weekly monsters and the major adversaries – the former were designed to be easily vanquished, whereas the latter could pose a real threat depending on the specific season.
In the world of Power Rangers, some “final bosses” chose to operate from their headquarters, whereas others engaged in battle with the heroes head-on. For instance, Rita Repulsa spent most of the original series on the moon, but Astronema ventured into Angel Grove a few times. Regardless of their approach, certain villains managed to come close to overpowering the Power Rangers teams.
6. The Green Ranger
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
For the first time, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers faced a formidable opponent when they introduced the malevolent Green Ranger. In a remarkable demonstration of power, Tommy Oliver’s introduction saw him effortlessly overpowering the heroes, marking a significant shift in the series as it was the first time the Power Rangers suffered such a devastating defeat, making the Green Ranger an immediate hit among fans and forever altering the show’s narrative.
In terms of aggressive actions and defeats depicted in the Power Rangers series, there wasn’t much more that the Green Ranger could have done against Jason and his comrades. With superior toys, a personal Megazord, and even his own theme song, the Green Ranger proved to us that the Power Rangers were not infallible. Fortunately, they eventually managed to break Rita Repulsa’s spell over Tommy, resulting in the Green Ranger joining their ranks.
5. Lord Zedd
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Lord Zedd carries a complex reputation within the series of Power Rangers. As an original character without a corresponding one in Super Sentai, he was intended to be a more menacing and capable adversary compared to Rita Repulsa. However, due to the comical nature that the villain took on during the early stages of the show, particularly after Rita’s return, it is often easy to overlook the fact that Zedd was genuinely terrifying and efficient in his initial episodes. When he first appeared on the scene, Lord Zedd brought about the destruction of the Power Rangers’ original mecha (Zords), and eventually, he sealed the fate of the Green Ranger permanently.
In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 2, Lord Zedd left an indelible mark due to the devastation caused by the destruction of the Zords and the necessity of creating a new Power Ranger after the Green Ranger’s powers vanished. Notably, 30 years later in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, Zedd came perilously close to annihilating the Rangers and even the entire universe. This anniversary season served as a refresher that Zedd can be an exceptional antagonist when he is not trivialized or made into a mere joke.
4. Divatox
Power Rangers Turbo
In comparison to other villains in the Power Rangers series, Divatox might not have been the best, but she managed to achieve something remarkable. Just like all her predecessors, she lost every weekly fight against the Rangers. However, what set Divatox apart was her destruction of the Command Center. This act led to the Turbo Rangers losing their powers and feeling helpless as Divatox embarked on a journey into space under Dark Specter’s orders. To add to their troubles, Zordon was abducted by the Alliance of Evil.
In contrast to many other seasons of Power Rangers, the conclusion of Turbo carries an overwhelming feeling of desolation and despair. It was intriguing, however, to witness the ripple effects of this season’s underwhelming performance in the later developments of the franchise. Remarkably, the storyline of Turbo served as a prelude to Power Rangers in Space, where T.J. and his comrades formed an alliance with a enigmatic Red Ranger from another world, ultimately acquiring newfound powers.
3. Psycho Rangers
Power Rangers in Space
In various universes, certain villains like Doomsday, Bane, and even the Psycho Rangers, are created merely to bring down the most noble heroes. These characters, particularly the Psycho Rangers who hail from the Power Rangers universe, are often portrayed as corrupt Rangers but in truth, they disguise their demonic nature. Their sole purpose is to cause chaos and spread evil. They debuted in “Rangers Gone Psycho,” an episode that was notably dark and depicted the Rangers suffering severe defeats.
Power Rangers In Space Team | |
---|---|
Character | Color |
Andros | Red Ranger |
T.J. | Blue Ranger |
Cassie | Pink Ranger |
Ashley | Yellow Ranger |
Carlos | Black Ranger |
Zhane | Silver Ranger |
As a die-hard fan of space operas, I vividly remember the chilling encounter between the Space Rangers and the Psycho Rangers – a memory that’s etched deeply if you were among those who watched it unfold as a child. There was no countering the Psycho Rangers, who appeared to be playing with their adversaries rather than fighting them honestly. The episode, “Rangers Gone Psycho,” remains indelible in my mind, but it wasn’t the only time the Psycho Rangers came perilously close to destroying the Power Rangers. In fact, during “The Power of Pink” from Lost Galaxy, Psycho Pink managed to take the life of Kendrix, the inaugural Lost Galaxy Pink Ranger.
In the span between the chilling episodes featuring the Psycho Rangers on “Power Rangers in Space” and the sad demise of the Pink Ranger in “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy”, it’s safe to say that the Psycho Rangers could be the most compelling villains in the Power Rangers franchise. Although they didn’t make a reappearance on the show following “The Power of Pink”, they have been explored further in the comics. In fact, the BOOM! Studios universe has introduced a Green Psycho Ranger and provided this evil group of creatures with an origin story that surprisingly made them seem more human-like.
2. Astronema
Power Rangers in Space
During their space mission, the Power Rangers encountered a series of challenging days following their encounter with the Psycho Rangers. Subsequently, Andros and his crew found themselves engaged in a struggle for the survival of the galaxy against Astronema’s troops. Although Dark Specter’s defeat was rather anticlimactic, Astronema proved to be an effective ruler over the Alliance of Evil. In “Countdown to Destruction,” it became clear that Earth and multiple other planets were under attack, leaving the Power Rangers with limited options for intervention.
As a devoted supporter, I can tell you that even with the assistance of the valiant Zeo Gold Ranger, there seemed little hope left for us. Witnessing the Rangers engage in fierce battles as insurgents, deprived of their spaceship and Zords, was thrilling indeed. It underscored just how precariously close Astronema and her forces were to conquering the universe. Had it not been for Zordon’s selfless sacrifice at the end of “Countdown to Destruction, Part 2,” the Alliance of Evil would have claimed control over the cosmos.
1. Robot Rita
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always
In the series “In Space” and later “Mystic Force”, Rita Repulsa underwent redemption and even switched sides to become an ally. However, when it came time for the original Power Rangers team to reunite in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always”, they needed Rita’s involvement. Enter Robot Rita, a reawakened, sinister version of Rita Repulsa, resurrected unintentionally by the Blue Ranger. In the opening scene of “Once & Always”, Robot Rita mercilessly slays Trini, the Yellow Ranger, which made her more terrifying than the original Rita Repulsa ever appeared.
In addition to overpowering the majority of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Robot Rita even managed to subdue numerous teams of Power Rangers from other squads. While much of this occurred off-camera, it’s undeniable that Robot Rita almost succeeded in seizing the powers of multiple Power Rangers teams, with the intention of altering history. The reunion of the Power Rangers, though tinged with sadness, was made more intriguing by the fact that Rita served as a formidable and menacing adversary for a change.
