Another Simple Favor: Shocking Charity Twist Explained

Caution: This discussion includes plot twists from the movie “Another Simple Favor“. The director of the film, Paul Feig, explains why Charity was pursuing Stephanie Smothers. In the sequel, Stephanie and Emily Nelson (played by Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively) attend a grand, seemingly unforeseen, Italian wedding between Emily and Dante Versano. As more murders occur and another perplexing investigation ensues, it is eventually disclosed in the movie that Charity is alive. The McLanden triplet, who had previously been believed dead, impersonates Emily and, as “Another Simple Favor” unfolds, confronts Stephanie and even shares a kiss with her.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Feig discussed the kiss between Charity and Stephanie. He explained that both Kendrick and Lively were supportive of the scene. According to him, since Charity was pretending to be Emily, she was delving into and understanding that relationship dynamic. Consequently, their moment together turned out to be “a very organic development.” Here are Feig’s remarks:

Everyone seemed really enthusiastic about it. Blake and Anna were more than willing to participate. Charity is attempting to emulate Emily’s lifestyle, but she wasn’t given the opportunity to be her sister. Therefore, she’s exploring what she believes is Emily’s life. In her mind, she believes there was a connection between Stephanie and Emily. She’s mimicking Emily’s behavior, attempting to portray herself as Emily, and it seemed like a very organic thing for her to do so.

Additionally, Feig touched upon the unexpected moment when Charity and Emily shared a kiss in the movie “Another Simple Favor“. He noted that Lively initially had reservations about this scene. More details on his thoughts can be found below.

When I shared my fresh idea for a storyline with Blake, she responded with a reassuring nod, admitting her uncertainty yet expressing faith in me. She took the plunge and embraced the concept.

What This Means For Another Simple Favor

How Well Does Charity Know Emily?

In the surprising turn of events in “Another Simple Favor“, Charity deceives Stephanie by pretending to have informed the Italian police about the murders of Dante and Sean Townsend. However, when Charity kisses her, it becomes evident to Stephanie that she is not Emily but rather an imposter, as shown by the absence of her distinctive tattoo. It was revealed that Charity, who had been declared dead at birth and raised by Linda, had been manipulated by her aunt for years before becoming part of a scheme that involved marrying Dante and gaining access to the Versano fortune.

Charity, yearning for a sibling connection she lacked in her childhood, felt driven to accuse Stephanie and take violent actions against her. She shared this motivation because of her unique ability to empathize with Emily/Hope and Faith. Yet, it appears that Charity might not fully understand Emily as well as she believed, hinting at an unease she displayed when attempting to bond with Emily by sedating her and kissing her.

Our Take On Another Simple Favor

Introducing Charity Makes Things Interesting

Initially, when Charity first met Stephanie, she came close to revealing her true self and hinting at some of her motives. Yet it was her kiss that eventually exposed Charity’s identity completely. By developing its characters, Another Simple Favor maintains the mystery engaging and adds depth to what viewers understand about Emily and her family. The plot twist where Linda and Charity tried to pose as Emily to gain control might have succeeded if not for Stephanie, and it’s intriguing to watch how this collaboration impacted the friendship between Emily and Stephanie.
