In simpler terms, Nicolas Cage, who won an Oscar, has shared some insights into the challenges he faced while shooting his recent psychological thriller now playing in cinemas. He admitted that certain scenes could have potentially been fatal for him, given his character’s role as a businessman going back to his Australian hometown to purchase the beach house of his childhood. Despite minimal surfing scenes in the movie, Cage expressed a desire for his character to engage more in surfing activities.
The actor mentioned that he had a conversation with Director Lorcan Finnegan about recreating a scene from the 1979 movie “Big Wednesday”. He explained that he vividly recalled Jan-Michael Vincent on the surfboard and the board wiping across the frame, creating a breathtaking sight in the water. However, he lamented that he didn’t have enough time to hone his skills to execute the shot effectively, as he wasn’t at the level required for it.

He acknowledged that unfortunately, “They didn’t manage to capture a single image of me standing on the surfboard.” The actor explained further that there were various circumstances that influenced the execution of stunts in The Surfer. “We dealt with factors such as weather issues and surprisingly enough, shark sightings and other complications,” he said.
In the past, Cage tried his hand at surfing, but he chuckled and admitted, ‘I was reduced to rubble!’ It was on Sunset Beach where I attempted to learn. My instructor provided a shortboard for me, but I insisted, ‘Give me a longboard instead.’
Despite having a longboard, Cage asserted that the ocean was too powerful for him. “I was pummeled and found myself trapped in a rip current,” he explained. “They said they spotted my board, which is shaped like a tombstone with its triangular top, getting carried away. I was clinging to the leash as I was flipping over, and it was a close call. I could have perished.” Cage confessed his fear, saying, “I have a young child now, and I’m not sure if I still want to take such risks.

As for me, much like the role I played in The Surfer, I too have a dream that persists. It’s about retiring someday, devoting time to the waves, savoring a glass of red wine, and indulging in a hearty bowl of spaghetti.
Currently showing in cinemas is the movie titled “The Surfer,” which has been labeled as “Fresh and Certified” on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 86% approval rating from over a hundred critics’ reviews.
