Iconic ’80s crime series set for another big screen remake
Miami Vice is getting the big screen treatment once again.
As reported by Variety, the director of “Top Gun: Maverick”, Joseph Kosinski, has been tapped to helm a new adaptation, with a screenplay written by Dan Gilroy.
For now, specifics about the storyline and actors are being kept secret, but the upcoming movie will be inspired by the famous ’80s TV show sharing the same name. This popular series featured Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas portraying undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs.

In 2006, a film based on two main characters played by Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell hit the screens. This dynamic duo, portraying detectives, were entangled in an intricate story revolving around narcotics barons and homicide.
During its time on the big screen, I must admit the movie didn’t quite live up to expectations, raking in $165 million compared to its reported production cost of $135 million.
The movie wasn’t highly praised by critics and it has only managed to garner a rating of 47%, based on more than 200 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film version of “Miami Vice” is visually stunning, but the main characters don’t possess the charm that their television versions did, and the plot, though nicely filmed, doesn’t meet the quality of Michael Mann’s superior movies according to the site’s review.
On the other hand, the fresh adaptation might perform well under Kosinski’s direction, given that his sequel to the 1986 film “Top Gun,” which earned a staggering $1.49 billion globally in 2022, was a significant success.
Additionally, it garnered a grand total of six Oscar nominations, with nods for both Best Picture and Best Sound, ultimately taking home the prize in the latter category.
Last year, it was announced that a third movie was being planned, featuring Tom Cruise along with Miles Teller and Glen Powell from the sequel. Since then, specifics about the project have been hard to come by.
