Thunderbolts* Unveils New Villain, Threatens Kingpin’s New Laws
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.
It appears that the Thunderbolts film could significantly amplify an already formidable MCU villain, posing a greater danger to the universe’s heroes. For the first time in a while, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced a movie primarily set in New York City, even though Thunderbolts takes its team on a global journey. However, a substantial portion of this film unfolds along the east coast of the United States. For example, the initial part of the movie showcases several members of Thunderbolts settling down in Washington D.C., before they eventually unite and form a team.
At the conclusion of Thunderbolts*, the narrative shifts towards New York City, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine introducing a fresh MCU hero (and adversary) at the revamped Avengers Tower for the team to confront. By establishing the climax of Thunderbolts* in New York near the Avengers Tower, Marvel Studios has connected the story more closely to previous MCU narratives. Many Phase 4 and Phase 5 movies have been set across various universes, making Thunderbolts* a much more significant film for the main MCU timeline. The close association with other MCU films may have made an already formidable villain even more menacing in Thunderbolts*.
Thunderbolts* Puts The People Of New York Through Another Superhero-Based Catastrophe
The Void Was Unleashed In New York
Initially, let’s consider the influence Thunderbolts had on New York City, and how this insight might bolster a villain’s scheme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As the story unfolds, Valentina ultimately releases Sentry/The Void upon the Thunderbolts. In the initial scenes, Bob is associated with the Thunderbolts, but it’s not until later that we learn he underwent a transformative medical procedure to become Sentry – an entity far surpassing the power of any Avenger preceding him. Sentry himself boasts power greater than Thor, creating intriguing Easter eggs and callbacks to the MCU’s past.
Without Bob, Valentina, and the other researchers aware, the serum transforming Bob into Sentry simultaneously amplified his hidden pain, depression, and past hurts, giving birth to the ominous entity called The Void. This enigmatic force cast a shadow over New York, compelling its inhabitants to re-experience their deepest despair and be trapped in an endless cycle of suffering through their own traumatic memories. Even the Thunderbolts themselves were not spared from this torment.
The Events Of Thunderbolts* Set Up Kingpin To Have An Easier Time Making Anti-Vigilante Legislation & Laws In New York
Kingpin Is Only Being Provided With More Ammunition
Having seen yet another calamity in New York orchestrated by superheroes, I am now certain that the MCU’s Kingpin might find a way to capitalize on this predicament. In the final episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Kingpin took office as the mayor of New York and enacted a law banning vigilantes. Although the series emphasized that this was primarily aimed at smaller heroes like Daredevil, it’s important to remember that there are connections between these street-level heroes and more prominent figures such as the Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Sentry/The Void. Consequently, Kingpin could cleverly manipulate the situation for his own gain.
Should any resistance arise from other political figures or superiors concerning his anti-vigilante laws, Kingpin could simply reference the events depicted in Thunderbolts to persuade them. It’s clear that a powerful figure casting darkness over New York could serve as a strong argument for Kingpin to tighten control on smaller vigilantes, to prevent potential repercussions. If this happens, it might significantly elevate Kingpin’s level of threat.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Exploring How Thunderbolts* Affected Kingpin & Daredevil Would Be A Perfect Way To Tie The Stories Together
Fixing The MCU’s Recent Interconnectivity Problems
As a fan eagerly anticipating the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” I can’t help but imagine how fascinating it would be if this storyline were to delve into the events of the “Thunderbolts” project. This connection could beautifully unite two distinct Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ventures, something that the Infinity Saga excelled at, despite occasional criticisms about interconnectivity during the Multiverse Saga.
Unfortunately, there have been instances where certain projects seemed disconnected from the broader narrative, while others were left untouched entirely. For a time, it felt as if the MCU lacked a clear direction, with its intricate web of stories appearing fragmented and disjointed.
2025’s Marvel movies appear to be addressing the lack of connection, as seen in the post-credit scene of Thunderbolts*, which connects to both Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the teases in Daredevil: Born Again hinting at more MCU vigilantes joining for season 2. Interestingly, though they are distinct stories with different scopes and tones, Thunderbolts* and Daredevil: Born Again may share links through The Void’s attack on New York in multiple ways. By doing so, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would recreate its trademark interconnected feel, which has been noticeably absent during Phases 4 and 5.
