Boasting a stellar cast, recurring jokes, and a generous helping of emotional scenes, Community ranks among the top sitcoms of the 2010s. Although it seemed like a typical setting, this show often defied conventional sitcom norms, offering viewers a glimpse into an unusual and eccentric universe. However, despite its exceptional world-building, Community had trouble getting one aspect correct: romantic dynamics.

Instead of sticking to typical college love stories filled with stereotypes, the sitcom “Community” offers a more genuine and relatable portrayal of relationships. Even though not every couple is instantly smitten, their complex dynamics make “Community” all the more endearing. Consequently, “Community” boasts some of the most appealing couples, despite their relationships being far from straightforward.

Season 3, Episode 11, “Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts”

Upon my arrival at Greendale, my marriage lay in ruins and my self-worth had plummeted to unparalleled depths. Yet, the Study Group’s camaraderie breathed newfound courage into me. However, my past with Andre, my estranged spouse, continued to weigh heavily on me. But, following a phase of reconciliation, we dared to give our love another shot.

As a dedicated movie-goer, halfway through Season 3, Andre asked me for my hand again, and my friends were already scheming about the wedding plans. While some fans argue I deserved more, I’m still happy to see myself rekindling with my one true love. However, our relationship has been stained by our past separation, which unfortunately places us at the bottom of this list.

Season 1, Episode 4, “Social Psychology”

In my humble opinion as a film critic, it was refreshing to witness Britta stepping into a new relationship after her rather peculiar one-night stand. Now, let me clarify that Vaughn wasn’t your typical knight in shining armor, and his peculiarity towards footwear might have given some an initial squirm, but I must admit, he treated Britta with a level of respect that Jeff, her previous suitor, failed to deliver consistently.

Their first encounter in “Social Psychology” left quite an impression on Britta, not only due to Vaughn’s unusual charm but also his impressive songwriting skills.

It seems quite likely that the main factor preventing this couple from entering into a lasting relationship was Britta being swayed by her friends’ opinions about him. When you delve deeper into their connection, it becomes apparent they share many similarities. Consequently, although Jeff and Britta have an unusual past, many fans lament that she didn’t focus more on Vaughn, as they believe he would have been a better match for her than the man who constantly played hard to get.

Season 4, Episode 1, “History 101”

Many fans strongly disapproved of Troy and Britta becoming a couple, primarily due to their apparent differences. Yet, one could make a case that Britta helped Troy break away from Abed and show his true self. While Troy’s bond with Abed is endearing, it occasionally kept him stuck in the past rather than encouraging him to embrace the promising future that awaited him.

Additionally, it’s crucial to note that their connection was already tense from the beginning. Despite enjoying their clandestine romance, their situation worsened when they publicly declared their relationship in “History 101.” It seems these characters weren’t fully prepared for a long-term commitment, but their turbulent relationship undeniably added an intriguing dimension to the series.

Season 3, Episode 7, “Studies in Modern Movement”

Regardless of whether they were officially together or not, it’s clear that there was some sort of deep connection between Dean Pelton and Jeff Winger. Some viewers see this bond as one of affection, while others think it’s more antagonistic, but what’s undeniable is that Dean Pelton has consistently demonstrated his strong feelings for Jeff. In the episode “Studies in Modern Movement,” they share a meal at a Mexican restaurant and later enact the memorable “Kiss from a Rose” scene.

Despite Jeff not acknowledging any romantic feelings towards Dean Pelton, he deeply respects him as both a friend and mentor. Their bond has been marked by many heartfelt moments, underscoring their strong relationship. Consequently, whether they are friends or something beyond that, the dynamic between Dean Pelton and Jeff remains one of the funniest duos on the show.

Season 2, Episode 6, “Epidemiology”

During the Halloween special titled “Epidemiology,” Shirley and Chang secretly go to a restroom nearby for a private moment, which later turns out to be more intimate than expected. The study group is taken aback and express their shock, as they didn’t anticipate such a move from Shirley. However, the situation becomes even more complex when Shirley learns that she’s pregnant and isn’t certain whether the child belongs to Chang or Andre.

Yet, it’s during Shirley’s delivery that a gentler side of Ben emerges. He stands by her, offering comfort amidst the frightening situation. Despite his eccentric nature, instances like these reveal that Ben has a soft spot for Shirley.

Season 1, Episode 7, “Introduction to Statistics”

I’m a strong advocate for Jeff Winger and Michelle Slater, who have managed to capture our hearts right from the start. Their significant impact on the show’s initial season is undeniable. The “will they/won’t they” tension between Jeff and Britta, while intriguing initially, soon lost its charm. However, Michelle, introduced in “Introduction to Statistics,” breathed a fresh wave of excitement into the mix. At first sight, she seemed like an ideal match for Jeff: intelligent, attractive, and quick-witted, offering a captivating twist to his storyline.

The main issue is that she doesn’t go out with students, yet Jeff is intent on altering her habits, which could involve finding unique ways for them to spend time together if they want to make it work. Despite the fact that this relationship might not last long or even get off the ground in the first place, it did add a bit of excitement to an otherwise dull storyline.

Season 1, Episode 15, “Romantic Expressionism”

Following his breakup with Britta and publicly embarrassing her, Vaughn finds himself drawn to Annie, who is a college student with an unrefined perspective on life. Given her innocence, it’s clear why she would require someone like Vaughn in her life. He was kind to her and accepted her naivety, demonstrating that he appreciated her for who she truly was.

Naturally, as an ardent fan, I couldn’t help but feel compelled when our study group intervened, trying to separate the couple. It was heartbreaking for many of us to witness their split, mainly because it denied Annie the opportunity to experience genuine affection. While Vaughn might not have been the perfect match for a headstrong woman like Britta, he seemed like the ideal partner for someone as cautious in love as Annie, allowing her to navigate romance gradually.

Season 4, Episode 8, “Herstory of Dance”

In “Herstory of Dance”, Abed finds himself in a typical sitcom predicament: having two dates for the dance. However, by the end of the evening, he chooses Rachel, an intelligent and unusual young lady. Despite his social difficulties, Abed’s bond with Rachel is remarkably affectionate.

Beyond this bond, it provided Abed with an opportunity to step away from his TV-inspired dreams and embrace the reality around him. Moreover, Rachel didn’t force him beyond his boundaries, demonstrating her awareness of his limitations and avoiding pushing him excessively out of his comfort zone. Consequently, it was heartening to witness Abed taking on a leading role in a romantic context for the first time.

Season 1, Episode 9, “Debate 109”

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that their relationship definitely turned a few heads, given the significant age difference between them. Yet, many viewers found solace in their connection and felt that Annie required a partner who had seen the world’s complexities. Their tender instances and endearing nicknames also served to humanize Jeff, demonstrating his capacity for romance when he chose to be.

In “Debate 109”, Annie and her friend shared their first kiss, revealing that her feelings for her friend ran deeper than a casual crush. This relationship served as an opportunity for Annie to demonstrate to the audience and her friends that she is a woman who manages her emotions with confidence. The relationship between Jeff and Annie, while often met with controversy, played a significant role in their characters’ growth by enabling them to transcend their predefined character stereotypes.

Season 2, Episode 21, “Paradigms of Human Memory”

Right from the get-go, Jeff and Britta seemed to have feelings for each other, but something always went wrong – be it a mistake on Jeff’s part or Britta distancing herself. This slow-building romance in the series was quite notable. However, when Abed revealed that Jeff and Britta were intimate during “Paradigms of Human Memory,” it became evident that they simply couldn’t resist each other.

Despite some viewers thinking these two characters don’t fit well together at all, they do share some heartfelt scenes. Although they never formally became a couple, fans are hoping that the series eventually gives them a satisfying conclusion.
