Superman 2025: Clark Kent Faces New Nemesis in the Newsroom!

In addition to the supervillains Superman will encounter in James Gunn’s 2025 movie, it has been confirmed that David Corenswet’s Clark Kent will also have a foe of his own. DC Studios has already revealed several main villains for the Man of Steel, such as Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, María Gabriela de Faría’s The Engineer, and the enigmatic Ultraman, that Superman will confront in the film titled Superman>.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Beck Bennett, who’s known for his SNL stint, had a chat with the DC Studios Showcase: The Official Podcast. During their conversation, he spilled some exciting beans about his character, Steve Lombard, in the upcoming Superman film. This means that our beloved Kent will have a personal and professional nemesis to tackle, adding a layer of complexity to his life. While Superman grapples with Lex Luthor and global perils, it seems Clark has his own challenges brewing!

In describing Lombard’s character, Bennett referred to him as “the annoying colleague at the Daily Planet.

In a more straightforward and conversational manner: “Previously, I referred to Steve Lombard as the Daily Planet jerk. For the sake of discussing the movie, though, I’ve opted to call him an adversary instead (laughs). That seems to be the term used in his Wikipedia entry.

He noted that Lombard is someone who lacks a filter and seems to believe he embodies a true, manly figure.

He was portrayed as Clark Kent’s antagonist at The Daily Planet due to his lack of a filter and blunt honesty. He often expresses whatever is on his mind, which gives an impression of macho masculinity. This behavior seems to be a way for him to conceal his insecurities.

Regarding his role at the Daily Planet, Bennett depicted Lombard as more specifically a “sports news reporter.

Initially, he worked as a sportscaster before transitioning to the role of sports editor. However, more recently, I find it fitting to refer to him simply as a sports journalist or sports reporter.

In a conversation, the SNL star shared that he imbued Lombard with a distinctive characteristic – the habit of placing his hands on his hips as a sign of authority or power.

Interesting. I believe what caught my attention was a subtle gesture – he often places his hands on his hips. It seemed to set the tone for me, although I can’t quite do it myself at this moment. It reminded me of something familiar, maybe it’s a pose he uses in the comics or similar. Essentially, it’s like a power stance, an unconscious gesture that resembles a casual ‘What are we discussing here?’ with his hands on his hips. That was a minor yet noticeable detail if there were any physical tics present.

He went on to suggest that certain elements penned by writer James Gunn in the Superman series distinguish Lombard’s portrayal from previous versions.

To be clear, there are certain written elements in this work that I believe are distinctively Steve’s own and differ from how he’s been portrayed in comics or prior adaptations.

In the series Superman, Steve Lombard, portrayed by Beck Bennett, is accompanied at the Daily Planet by Clark Kent (David Corenswet), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Perry White (Wendell Pierce), Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), and Ron Troupe (Christopher McDonald).

Although it’s uncertain how significant Lombard will be in James Gunn’s Superman, eager fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out, as the DCU film is scheduled for release in theaters on July 11th.

Steve Lombard’s Adversary Role in Superman Explained

In the TV show “Superman,” starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, it’s crucial that the Daily Planet characters play significant roles, especially during times when Superman is busy with his superhero responsibilities and the impending danger from Lex Luthor.

As a film critic, I must confess that Steve Lombard, portrayed as an outspoken antagonist at the Daily Planet who considers himself a genuine tough guy, might just find himself becoming Superman’s comedic foil in this movie.

Previously, Lombard made a single live-action appearance in the film “Man of Steel,” with Michael Kelly, known for “Dawn of the Dead,” portraying him. More recently, Kelly added his second DC role to his acting credits in “The Penguin.

The sports journalist depicted as the “Daily Planet snob” is not surprising, given that in the movie “Man of Steel,” he was a previous NFL player who made unsuccessful advances towards younger female colleagues but eventually assisted in protecting his co-workers during General Zod’s attack on Metropolis by Kryptonians.
