John Wick’s Biggest Flaw Exposed! You Won’t Believe It!

Over the years, the John Wick film series has expanded into a significant intellectual property, but it recently acknowledged its most significant drawback prior to Keanu Reeves’ expected comeback. Since 2014, Keanu Reeves has portrayed the title character in the neo-noir action thriller movie franchise, appearing in a total of four films. The John Wick series primarily revolves around the story of the legendary hitman’s unwilling return to the criminal underworld, delving into various missions and dangers after his departure from retirement. However, the ending of John Wick 4 saw a conclusive end for the beloved Keanu Reeves action character due to his untimely demise.

For quite some time, it seemed like the end of the popular series, John Wick, following the finale of its fourth installment. Yet, unexpectedly, in April 2025 at CinemaCon, Keanu Reeves’ return for John Wick 5 was confirmed. Chad Stahelski will be directing this sequel. Although updates on John Wick: Chapter 5 have been scarce since then, given its early stage, the confirmation of Keanu Reeves‘ return suggests that the franchise may not function effectively without John Wick himself at its core.

There’s No John Wick Without Keanu Reeves, And The Continental Proved It

The Continental Had Great Worldbuilding, But Lacked Presence

Although The Continental: From the John Wick Universe offered an interesting spinoff, it underscored the importance of Keanu Reeves in future John Wick films and television productions. The Continental, a Peacock original miniseries, focused on Colin Woodell’s portrayal of a young Winston Scott during the 1970s, revealing his journey to managing the New York branch of the “Continental” hotel chain, offering sanctuary to skilled assassins. Despite scoring a respectable 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, it fell short of the films’ standard.

John Wick movies & TV shows Reception
John Wick (2014) $86 million
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) $174.3 million
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) $327.7 million
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) $440.1 million
The Continental: From the World of John Wick (2023) 63% Tomatometer, 77% Popcornmeter
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (2025) TBD
John Wick: Chapter 5 (TBA) TBD

Despite the fact that The Continental series expanded upon the universe of John Wick, it presented Winston Scott’s backstory and offered insights into how The Continental was established. However, it fell short in terms of runtime balance and overall movie-like feel compared to the films. Consequently, the series received a mix of positive and negative reviews. Notably, since the characters did not quite meet the high standards set by Keanu Reeves’ John Wick in the movies, it’s no surprise that a potential second season for The Continental was unlikely, as stated in an update.

John Wick’s Next Spinoff Will Include Keanu Reeves

Ballerina Will Feature John Wick In Some Capacity

It’s great news that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role in the upcoming spinoff of the John Wick series, titled “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”. This movie is set between the third and fourth films, which makes it possible for Reeves to return without contradicting Wick’s death in the fourth movie. The film, produced by Lionsgate, is scheduled for release in June. It focuses on ballerina-assassin Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas), who starts training in the Ruska Roma traditions to avenge her father’s death.

In the upcoming movie “Ballerina,” we’ll have the pleasure of seeing Keanu Reeves reprising his role as the beloved assassin John Wick once more, marking his first appearance on screen since the 2023 finale. Yet, there are several other talented actors set to join the cast of “Ballerina,” including Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Norman Reedus. While it’s exciting to welcome John Wick back, given that his presence makes this spinoff more intriguing for fans of the series, it’s worth noting that with his character not at the film’s center, there’s a possibility of less favorable reviews, similar to the reception of “The Continental” spinoff.

John Wick 5 Starring Keanu Reeves Is The Safest Option For The Franchise

Spinoffs Are Fun, But They Can’t Replace A John Wick Sequel

Although spin-offs can be entertaining, they can’t match up to the excitement of a new John Wick sequel, making John Wick: Chapter 5 with Keanu Reeves seem like the best choice for the franchise. The Continental miniseries attempted to center around another character in the John Wick universe, young Winston Scott, to expand the world of assassins. However, most fans weren’t invested enough in Winston Scott from the movies to commit to an entire TV series dedicated to him. Consequently, it is crucial for popular and endearing characters to reappear in John Wick: Chapter 5.

It wouldn’t be fitting to have another “John Wick” film without John Wick being present. Given that the fourth movie hinted at his death, the upcoming installment may need to explain this seeming contradiction, perhaps by having John Wick return from the dead, much like in the first film where he emerged from retirement. With Keanu Reeves’ popularity, it seems logical for him to be involved in the next “John Wick” project within the franchise.

I Love The World Of John Wick, But I Love Keanu Reeves’ Character Even More

More John Wick Content With Keanu Reeves Will Always Be Better

What I adore about the John Wick universe is primarily Keanu Reeves’ character that keeps me hooked. Following the success of the initial film, director Chad Stahelski outlined a strategy for constructing a broad John Wick universe, featuring numerous characters and facets of the assassin’s realm. In essence, Stahelski reminisced about saying, “let’s go big like The Lord of the Rings” regarding the franchise’s extensive scope. Therefore, while it’s logical that spinoffs focusing on various characters will be developed to fulfill Stahelski’s vision, the series might shift away from John Wick’s narrative.

In a notable display of commitment to his roles, Keanu Reeves often performs his own stunts in the “John Wick” series, demonstrating his dedication. Interestingly, the charm of this actor translates onto the screen, making John Wick an amusing character despite his profession as an assassin. The franchise occasionally satirizes its genre, adding humor to the mix. From its very beginning, the heart-wrenching backstory and exceptional fighting abilities of John Wick quickly drew viewers in when it debuted in 2014. Therefore, although world-building is important, we always crave more “John Wick” content, particularly with Keanu Reeves leading the way.
