Thunderbolts* Twist Reveals Why They’re Key Players in Avengers: Doomsday & It’s Wild
Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Thunderbolts*.
After seeing the movie “Thunderbolts”, it’s crystal clear to me why the MCU filmmakers chose the cast they did for “Avengers: Doomsday”. This newfound understanding has only heightened my anticipation for the upcoming film. While the plot of “Avengers: Doomsday” is still somewhat mysterious, we know that Doctor Doom is looming and that the events will presumably pave the way for “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Interestingly, our view of “Avengers: Doomsday” has become clearer in recent months due to the latest cast announcement.
The announcement unveiled a variety of characters set to appear in the upcoming film, boasting intriguing selections such as X-Men actors from the Fox movies reprising their roles after many years, hinting at an engaging narrative for the film. Alongside notable cast additions like Loki and Shang-Chi from Avengers: Doomsday, it was also confirmed that the primary Thunderbolts team – comprising Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, US Agent, and “Bob” – would make an appearance. The Thunderbolts movie itself has provided additional insight into this.
The Thunderbolts* Being Announced For Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Naturally Raised So Many Questions
Before the official announcement of the cast for “Avengers: Doomsday” and the release of “Thunderbolts”, there was much speculation about which characters might join the next Avengers film, but discussions rarely centered on the anti-hero team themselves. Although the movie hinted at the introduction of Sentry, implying he could potentially appear to counterbalance the immense power required to confront a formidable Doctor Doom, the more down-to-earth traits and abilities of most other characters led many to believe that other heroes were more likely to feature in the upcoming release.
Previously, it wasn’t clear if the main Thunderbolts team from the March 2025 Avengers: Doomsday would appear in the film. However, the recent cast update has confirmed that almost all of them will be reprising their roles, implying a closer connection between Thunderbolts and Avengers: Doomsday than previously assumed. This revelation, made just before the release of Thunderbolts, hints that the storyline of the movie might be more intertwined with Avengers: Doomsday than expected, bringing the new MCU group into the spotlight significantly.
The Thunderbolts* Movie Ending Explains Exactly Why The Team Are Part Of The Next Avengers Movie
Instead of merely being pulled into the turmoil depicted in Avengers: Doomsday, the movie Thunderbolts offers a more explicit explanation for their presence. In the film’s climax, Valentina, having initially attempted to eliminate them, deceives the team and persuades them to attend a press conference. There, she publicly announces them as her own superhero squad and bestows upon them the title of the New Avengers.
In a surprising turn of events, I later found out that this situation had stirred up conflicts between the faction and Sam Wilson’s Avengers team, as Bucky Barnes hinted in the Thunderbolts post-credits scene that he had discussed the shared use of the Avengers name with Captain America, which didn’t end well. However, considering this storyline is set 14 months later and they’re still going by ‘Avengers’, it appears the New Avengers (or even New Avengerz, if Red Guardian manages to push through his name change initiative) will retain the title for now. Interestingly, it seems they’ll also be delving into events connected to The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the near future.
In this scenario, having the primary cast from the Thunderbolts* featured in the Avengers: Doomsday film seems logical because it implies that characters from both Avenger teams will show up in the sequel. This not only offers exciting possibilities for crafting distinctive Avengers narratives and expanding their scope, but also hints at the upcoming movie addressing the ongoing struggle between two factions, revealing how two teams with disparate histories and rosters, each claiming to be Marvel’s premier hero group, will impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
I’m So Excited To See The “New Avengers” Vs Avengers Conflict Unfold
Heroism isn’t exclusive to individuals with flawless pasts and unwavering moral standards, as portrayed in the story of “Thunderbolts*“. The “New Avengers”, often labeled as outcasts and misfits, demonstrate true heroism by recognizing that safeguarding and defending each other, as well as the public, is the right action to take. Whether their actions are recognized as heroic within the broader hero community or not, this selfless determination makes them genuine heroes.
*I’m assuming Thunderbolts is a fictional work here, as there isn’t an actual Marvel Comics team called “New Avengers” in the storyline titled “Thunderbolts”. I apologize for any confusion caused by my mistake.
Absolutely, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has effectively explored this theme in narratives such as Iron Man’s and Loki’s, where both characters confront the repercussions of their past actions, albeit in distinct situations. They eventually transform themselves to contribute positively to the world or universe at large. Considering the MCU’s past success in portraying this theme, it seems likely that the New Avengers will not only embody this idea but also prove to be more than mere substitutes for the original team, offering something unique and substantial.
Revisiting the theme of internal conflicts within teams like the New Avengers and the Avengers, as seen in movies such as The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War, adds depth to the narrative of Avengers: Doomsday. This approach allows for a humorous or more serious take on the story, depending on its needs. A comical twist arises when Captain America grapples with a court case over the ownership of the Avengers, but this also touches upon long-standing questions about what truly constitutes the Avengers as a team and what it means to be a hero in general.
In “Avengers: Doomsday,” it appears that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom could challenge the traditional notion of a hero. This might occur when the heroes encounter their former friend and ally, Tony Stark, on a new adversary, or because Doctor Doom is trying to safeguard his universe from Incursions and an impending multiversal crisis. Given this intriguing premise, “Avengers: Doomsday” promises to be the ideal platform for showcasing this latest dispute within the Avengers team. Here’s hoping that the new MCU ensemble maintains the same level of excitement and charm as they did in “Thunderbolts.”
*Note: Thunderbolts is not an official title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a comic book series that has inspired speculation about potential future films.
