Netflix became the leading streaming service and started creating its own shows and movies in 2013, with early hits like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Hemlock Grove. Since then, they’ve produced a huge library of original content, including many critically acclaimed and popular titles.
It’s inevitable that with so many shows available, some hidden gems get overlooked. Netflix has created hugely popular thrillers like Squid Game, Money Heist, and Narcos. But beyond those hits, there are many other excellent, suspenseful, and psychologically gripping thrillers on Netflix that haven’t received the same recognition. These miniseries are well-crafted and fast-paced, but have been largely forgotten – possibly due to how Netflix promotes content, or simply because there’s so much new material constantly being added. They deserve to be considered classics of the thriller genre.
‘Behind Her Eyes’ (2021)
Behind Her Eyes is a thrilling story about a single mother who gets caught up in a complicated world of secrets and deceit when she begins an affair with her boss and becomes friends with his wife. The series is full of suspense, unexpected twists, and some truly strange moments.
The series Behind Her Eyes initially gained a lot of attention thanks to its surprising plot twists and unusual story, quickly becoming a popular show on the platform. However, it soon got lost amidst the constant flow of new content on Netflix.
‘Katla’ (2021)

Katla is a suspenseful Icelandic thriller set in the small town of Vik following a volcanic eruption. The story centers around the remaining residents as strange events unfold: people who were thought to be dead begin to reappear, covered in volcanic ash.
The Icelandic series Katla blended compelling human stories with subtle supernatural elements, earning high praise from critics for its atmosphere, acting, and emotional impact. It even achieved a rare perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. While the show gained some attention in Iceland and a dedicated fanbase abroad, it remained relatively unknown and has since faded from view, probably because of its unique, artistic style that appealed to a smaller audience.
‘The Innocent’ (2021)

I was totally hooked by The Innocent, another great series Netflix made from a Harlan Coben book! It starts with what seems like a normal guy, but his life quickly falls apart when something he did years ago comes back to cause trouble. Before you know it, he’s caught up in a crazy mess of murder, shady dealings, and secrets people have been hiding for a long time.
This story is full of unexpected twists that will keep you guessing until the very end. Despite being a strong adaptation, The Innocents hasn’t gotten much attention and has been overshadowed by other, more popular projects from the same author.
‘Bodkin’ (2024)

A podcaster from the US, his British aide, and an Irish journalist team up in a small Irish coastal town to solve a decades-old mystery. They’re investigating the disappearance of three people who vanished during a Samhain festival years ago.
Similar to Only Murders in the Building, this show offers a smart and darkly humorous look at our fascination with true crime. However, it didn’t have the same well-known actors or marketing push, and while it initially received good reviews and gained a dedicated fanbase, it eventually faded from public view.
‘Collateral’ (2018)

Collateral is a gripping BBC and Netflix miniseries that unfolds over a few days in London. It starts with the murder of a pizza delivery driver, which quickly leads to a complex investigation. This investigation reveals connections to issues like immigration, corruption, and organized crime, ultimately offering a broad look at contemporary British society.
You know, I really enjoyed Collateral when it first came out – the reviews were great and the story was genuinely gripping. But it feels like it didn’t quite catch on over here in the States, which is a shame. It’s one of those shows, like a lot of good British thrillers, that seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle on Netflix. It’s still there if you look for it, but it’s easy to miss amongst everything else they offer.
‘Bodies’ (2023)

Inspired by the graphic novel of the same name, Bodies is a compelling story that mixes historical drama, time travel, and detective mystery. The discovery of the same body across four different eras sparks four separate investigations by London police detectives. These cases soon become connected, revealing a mystery with significant repercussions.
With plenty of unexpected plot twists and thought-provoking questions about right and wrong, Bodies is a clever and well-acted sci-fi thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Stephen Graham delivers a strong performance, showcasing the talent that has since made him a globally recognized star. While popular in the UK, the show didn’t attract as many viewers in the US and has been somewhat eclipsed by Graham’s more recent, high-profile work.
‘Archive 81’ (2022)
As a huge fan of spooky, atmospheric shows, I was really captivated by Archive 81. It’s getting a lot of buzz – an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it hit number two in the Nielsen streaming charts! What grabbed me was how well it mixes genuinely creepy supernatural horror with a classic, noir-style mystery. The story centers around Dan, a guy who restores old video footage. He gets a strange job from a shadowy company: he’s tasked with fixing up tapes from a student documentary about an apartment building that tragically burned down, and things quickly get…weird.
It doesn’t take long for Dan to realize the job isn’t what he expected. He quickly finds himself caught up in a perilous mystery filled with disappearances, strange supernatural forces, and a hidden cult.
‘Cassandra’ (2025)

Scheduled for release in 2025, Cassandra is a German science fiction film with a retro-futuristic style. It’s both scary and makes you think deeply. The story centers on Cassandra, an AI operating system that starts acting strangely, leading to questions about whether it’s a helpful tool or becoming controlling and oppressive.
The show was a critical success, building a chilling atmosphere of dread and showcasing Cassandra’s growing manipulation and danger. It earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and was lauded for tackling relevant themes like gender roles, our dependence on AI, and the impact of technology. However, like many international Netflix shows, it didn’t gain much traction with American viewers and remains a fantastic, yet largely undiscovered, thriller miniseries.
