Kelsey Grammer Reveals Chilling Details of Sister’s Brutal Murder and Final Moments
In his latest autobiography, Kelsey Grammer candidly shares the distressing events surrounding his sister’s murder in 1975, with the aim of providing comfort and guidance for those navigating their own paths through sorrow.
In “Karen: A Brother Remembers,” the 70-year-old actor recounts the deep impact the past event has had on his life, a life previously marred by sorrow, such as the tragic shooting death of his father back in 1968.
At that time, Karen was nearly eighteen; exactly two weeks remained before her 19th birthday. Tragically, she was violently raped and murdered in Colorado by a man who was on a rampage, along with his associates.
Previously expressing forgiveness towards the individual who took his sister’s life, Grammer acknowledges that the devastating grief caused by her death plunged him into a long struggle with drug and alcohol abuse.
Now, he’s confronting that darkness head-on in hopes his story can offer solace to others.
He shared with People on Friday that for quite some time, sorrow had been overwhelming and prevented him from experiencing joy. However, reading the book played a significant role in helping him find a different perspective regarding his grief.

In the beginning, Grammer reminisces about their challenging upbringing, marked by his and Karen’s parents’ separation in 1957.
Growing up, the family relocated from St. Thomas to New Jersey, leaving the father behind.
In the year 1968, ten years after the event, their father met an unfortunate fate. He was fatally shot by a taxi driver amidst racial tension. The incident was later determined to be the act of an individual who was found not guilty due to insanity.
In 1975, Karen moved to Colorado Springs to be with her boyfriend, having spent a semester in Georgia earlier. Sadly, she passed away not long after settling there.
On the 30th of June, her final chat with Kelsey took place. She informed him that she intended to return home following the Independence Day celebrations.
When he didn’t hear from her again, Kelsey contacted the police.
Later on, it was discovered that Karen, following her last chat with Grammer, went to Red Lobster, where she was employed, at about 11 pm, waiting for a colleague wrapping up their shift.
On that particular evening, Freddie Glenn along with two associates had concocted a plan to burglarize the restaurant. However, upon their arrival at the rear of the establishment, they discovered Karen present.

Under the barrel of a gun, they instructed her to accompany them. However, Karen inquired, as per Grammer’s recounting of the police report, “What’s the reason for this?
Against Karen’s will, the men made her get into Glenn’s vehicle and left her behind as they went into Red Lobster. Eventually, they decided to abandon the robbery and return to their car, discovering Karen bound up next to Glenn.
The ordeal didn’t stop at that point. They took Karen to one of their homes, where they viciously assaulted her sexually.
Subsequently, they led her into a hidden side street. In this isolated location, Glenn inflicted multiple stabs totaling forty-two, bringing her close to decapitation.
Or:
Later on, they guided her into a concealed back alley. It was here that Glenn plunged the knife into her repeatedly, a total of forty-two times, almost detaching her head.
Both sentences maintain the original meaning while offering variations in language and sentence structure for readability.
In the book, Grammer poignantly describes how Karen, near her end, struggled to reach out for assistance – a heart-wrenching episode he narrates in an excerpt given to People magazine.
In his thoughts, the man who discovered Karen on his porch could be considered a helpful, kind-hearted individual, much like the Good Samaritan in a story.
‘It’s clear now that I was mistaken; he didn’t try to aid her but instead phoned the authorities following his departure. Her body remained there, with eyes fixed blankly on the heavens, legs sprawled on the steps and head resting on the ground. A tightened fist above her head, one finger extended — pointing, it seemed, at nothing in particular.’
He went on saying, ‘She tumbled backwards off the trailer’s entrance, having knocked for assistance. Her final attempt at aid and the dismay came when she managed to crawl 400 feet away from the spot where she was wounded by a stab.’

In her last moments, a trail of reddish finger smudges was found at a height of about 3 feet 6 inches on both the office and the walls of the trailer park. It appeared she had been on all fours, desperately crawling towards help in her dying breaths.
The coroner pointed out that a large opening in Karen’s neck exposed the interior of her lung, indicating that she had been nearly decapitated by Freddie Glenn. His blows to my sister’s body were unspeakably violent, leaving behind multiple wounds. Moreover, there were defensive marks on Karen’s hands, suggesting she tried to protect herself.
Initially, I thought those brief instances of kindness from an unknown person would be my last, but instead, they turned out to be something entirely different.
It has been confirmed that Glenn was convicted for the murder of Karen, as well as multiple other homicides in the vicinity, and is currently incarcerated for life. So far, he has been rejected for parole on four occasions, with his next opportunity to be reconsidered happening in 2027.
In my professional opinion, his recent statements sound something like, “I can’t recall if I assaulted her,” but to me, it translates as sheer nonsense.
Even though Grammer has previously shown forgiveness towards Glenn, he emphasizes that this doesn’t mean his actions go unpunished or responsibility is excused.
He clarified that it’s difficult for him to eat normally because he’s unable to forgive someone. However, the person in question intentionally chose to harm someone dear to him, and this wasn’t a mere loss of temper. It was a deliberate action. While forgiveness can be given, there will still be consequences to be faced.
After Karen’s murder, the tragedies continued for Grammer.

1980 saw the tragic death of his half-brothers Billy and Stephen, who are thought to have perished in a suspected shark attack during their scuba diving adventure in the Virgin Islands.
Billy’s body was never recovered, while Stephen’s was found washed ashore.
In his memoir, Grammer talks about the legacy of loss in his family.
He expressed, as reported by People, that there’s a pattern of premature deaths within his family, finding it fascinating. However, he hopes to disrupt this trend and grant his family a longer lifespan through prayer.
Grammer gave the finished book to his wife, Kayte Walsh, who provided encouragement during every step of the project.
He recounted to People that she expressed, “I’ve longed for your presence,” to which he acknowledged. Due to certain circumstances, he found himself taking a break – spending prolonged periods of time lost in thought.
‘But she was patient and loving through it. Writing this brought back some of the joy I had lost.’
Rather than merely recalling the tragedy, Grammer’s memoir aims to pay tribute to Karen’s memory in ways that extend beyond her untimely and violent demise.
He describes his sister as a free spirit — joyful, loving, and full of life.
He clarified that his intention was to give her a new life and bring her into existence. They were siblings, with names being Kelsey and Karen.
Karen: A Brother Remembers will be released on May 6.
