5 Dark Secrets of Power Rangers You Won’t Believe!

These little-known facts about the Power Rangers are seldom discussed within the series itself, but they become quite apparent once you start to notice them. The Power Rangers have been airing since 1993 and have consistently appeared on television, in movies, video games, and toys ever since with only brief interruptions. This long-running children’s superhero show has a unique style that makes it easy to identify the franchise just by looking at one frame. Power Rangers typically stick close to their traditional formula, choosing not to stray far from what works. Essentially, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is the philosophy that guides this enduring series.

Children’s shows like Power Rangers may appear bright and full of action, with their vivid colors, flashy weapons, and explosive effects that kids find appealing. However, beneath the surface of exciting transformations, bonding moments, and battles against villains, there are some unsettling aspects to the world of Power Rangers. Many kids’ shows can raise troubling questions if one looks closely, but Power Rangers stands out as especially questionable.

5. The Battles Result In Citywide Destruction

Buildings, Bridges, And More Are Destroyed By Megazords And Aliens

Whenever I watch a Power Rangers showdown against these alien invaders, it’s always a spectacle of epic proportions. The aliens swell to colossal sizes, and our heroes, the Rangers, combine their Zords to create the fearsome Megazords, ready to take on the threat. These clashes are strikingly similar to the Kaiju fights in the iconic Toho Godzilla movies. In these battles, the Zords, Megazords, and aliens wreak havoc, slamming into bridges, towering skyscrapers, and massive structures, probably carving out craters large enough for several football fields in their wake.

As a movie critic, I must say, the cities where the Power Rangers battle seem to be left in ruins for extended periods – possibly even years. In this film, Angel Grove, California, is a frequent battleground, but considering the destruction left behind after each fight, it’s hard not to wonder if there are construction companies with an endless supply of resources at their disposal. However, one can only imagine the financial burden on the city, and I highly doubt insurance policies cover Acts of Zordon!

4. Teenagers Are Roped Into Wars

Even The Power Ranger Leaders Are Young

It’s evident that the soldiers Zordon enlists to defend Earth are young adolescents, often referred to as “teenagers with a certain attitude.” In truth, some of these teenagers are still barely beyond their pre-teen years. Armed with combat skills, massive vehicles, and weapons lethal enough to cause serious harm or even death, Zordon mobilizes these Power Rangers into his military campaign.

This conflict is a struggle between good and wicked forces, and these children are barely into their teenage years when they are thrust into this war. Even the commanders of the Power Rangers are not particularly old. Jason Lee Scott, the first Red Ranger, was only 14 when the series began, and he bore the responsibility for everyone on his team. That’s a significant burden for anyone, especially a young person.

3. Civilians Must Have Been Killed By Massive Monsters

Sometimes People Are Evacuated Before A Big Battle

In Power Rangers, it’s frequently emphasized that Angel Grove has been evacuated, often through a news reporter announcing this on screen. Scenes also show the Rangers personally evacuating civilians before battles begin. However, given the wide scope of these conflicts, it’s plausible to assume that civilian casualties are substantial, especially if we don’t see an explicit evacuation sequence or even when one is shown due to the vast scale of the fights.

It seems these extraterrestrials frequently visit Earth, often causing destructive battles that leave cities in ruins. Regrettably, it’s unlikely that civilians could escape buildings fast enough, or perhaps debris from buildings or robots was flung vast distances, potentially harming anyone unlucky enough to be in its path. Films such as Godzilla, Pacific Rim, and Batman v Superman suggest that even the best-intentioned hero cannot always prevent innocent people from being caught in the crossfire.

2. “The Power Rangers Curse” Is An Unnerving Legacy

Several Power Ranger Cast Members Have Died Young

There’s been a somber side to the Power Rangers universe too. Unofficially, this is often attributed to the “Power Rangers Curse,” which has sadly claimed several lives of former cast members. Notable actors from the series have passed away under heartbreaking and unexpected circumstances. For instance, Erik Frank, who portrayed David Trueheart, succumbed to an undisclosed illness. Tragically, Thuy Trang, known as the original Yellow Ranger, passed away in a car accident in 2001.

I can’t help but reflect on the unfortunate and untimely passing of some beloved Power Rangers cast members. For instance, Maurice Mendoza, who played Trini’s love interest, Richie, in the original series, left us much too soon at just 39 years old. No reason was provided for his departure. Similarly, Richard Genelle, a familiar face across various Power Rangers series as Ernie, passed away due to a heart attack at only 47. It’s also worth noting that many lesser-known characters also met with tragic ends, which has led many to speculate about the existence of a “Curse” surrounding this iconic franchise.

1. The Power Rangers Kill Many Of Their Enemies

Characters Don’t Usually Die In Kids’ Shows

Superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man generally try to apprehend or incapacitate their foes instead of taking their lives. However, the Power Rangers’ fights with aliens often lead to their elimination as they vanish during the explosions caused by their weapons, which is quite intense for a children’s television series.

Displaying death, including the demise of villains, is generally too intense for most young viewers, and Power Rangers frequently includes such scenes in their episodes. It’s not that these monsters and aliens in Power Rangers are misconstrued, but they are certainly portrayed as Saturday morning cartoon antagonists rather than formidable invaders requiring immediate eradication. The inevitability of a villain’s death in Power Rangers is always assumed, and the stark reality that the Power Rangers themselves are lethal is rarely acknowledged.
