Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” Tanks With Disastrous Rotten Tomatoes Score After Troubled Release

The newly released movie starring Alec Baldwin is now showing in cinemas. Nevertheless, its production was prolonged due to the unfortunate incident involving a shooting accident on set and subsequent contentious release.

The Western film titled “Rust” made its premiere in cinemas on May 2nd, but unfortunately, it’s not gaining much popularity among audiences. Penned and directed by Joel Souza, the movie features Alec Baldwin in a significant role, with additional credits as co-writer and producer. Upon its release, the movie opened to a disappointing 56% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies it as “rotten.” Since then, its rating has been decreasing further.

Last year, on November 20, 2024, the movie “Rust” made its first appearance at the Camerimage Festival in Poland. However, it was seen by a limited audience. There was some debate among Hutchins’ former peers about whether or not premiering the film was the right decision. Now, the movie is available to the public.

Originally, “Rust” received a score of 56%, but as more reviews rolled in, it dipped even further to 50%. As of now, around 20 critics have shared their thoughts on the film.

In a sea of reviews, Brian Truitt stands out positively. He asserts that the film, ‘Rust’, is deeply connected to a fateful day, admitting it’s not flawless but finds beauty in tragedy. He deems it a robust, if overly lengthy, narrative about family and atonement, particularly appealing to fans of ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Horizon’. Rafer Guzman echoes this appreciation, noting that despite its tragic foundation, this Western maintains its ground with raw authenticity, depth, and instances of breathtaking beauty.

Kyle Smith notes that Baldwin navigates through a tragedy, and he suggests that “The Old West portrays a harsh, warped moral terrain where righteous individuals can be mistaken for villains, and the opposite is also true. This idea may not be original, but it serves as a thought-provoking foundation for the western drama ‘Rust.’ In this narrative, a 13-year-old boy who inadvertently killed a man while hunting a wolf is set up for an unjust confrontation with the gallows.

Other reviews didn’t share the same level of excitement. Critic Brian Orndorf comments that director Souza lacks a sense of dramatic buildup, as the film doesn’t escalate to an intense or deep ending (despite gunfights), nor does it culminate in a meaningful one. Mark Dujsik, on the other hand, describes Rust as a story that is engaging but fundamentally flawed and overly reminiscent of previous narratives.

Rust Was Covered in Unwanted Incidents

The tragic incident involving a prop gun occurred during the filming of a Western on October 21, 2021, leading to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Subsequent events saw a lawsuit being filed, with the Hutchins family eventually reaching a settlement. Charges against actor Alec Baldwin were ultimately dropped.

Approximately several weeks following the shooting incident, operator Jason Miller was bitten by a brown recluse spider during the process of closing down the set. The bite led to severe tissue decay and blood poisoning, necessitating hospitalization and numerous surgeries to prevent amputation of his arm.

Rust, much like Supernatural, featured Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins, and Devon Werkheiser. However, due to scheduling issues arising from delayed production, it parted ways with its cast members after initial commitments.

Rust is now available in theaters.
