Brett Goldstein ‘accidentally’ became a breakout star of Ted Lasso and is now taking over Hollywood with a  Warner Bros deal, two Emmys and ‘growing close’ to Jennifer Lopez

He’s rapidly becoming a major figure in Hollywood, unexpectedly gaining fame as a star on Ted Lasso in 2020.

Brett Goldstein started as a writer on the show, but he became famous for playing Roy Kent – the hilariously grumpy team captain and coach of AFC Richmond.

Over the past few years, the 45-year-old British actor has been working more and more, both performing and contributing creatively to projects behind the scenes.

I’m so excited to see him starring in Netflix’s new comedy, ‘Office Romance,’ alongside Jennifer Lopez! There are even rumors they’re getting close, which is lovely to hear. I’m definitely going to be watching!

He playfully acknowledged his recent rise to popularity, joking that it took him twenty years to become an overnight success. He added with a laugh, ‘It makes sense, though – no one knew who I was before!’

Everyone’s talking about this rising Hollywood star and the rumors that he’s dating a major celebrity. Here’s what the Daily Mail has to say about him.

Brett was born in Sutton in the south London suburbs into a Jewish family.

My love for Tottenham Hotspur started with my dad, and it’s become a bit of a personal philosophy for me – I always say supporting them is ‘the hope that kills you’ because it’s so true! It perfectly captures the rollercoaster of emotions being a Spurs fan brings.

After completing school, he went on to earn a film studies degree from Warwick University.

He moved to Marbella, Spain, for a short time to work at a strip club that his father bought during a period of personal upheaval.

Brett then moved to New York to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts until 2023.

He spent time writing scripts, and eventually used his experiences living in Marbella as the basis for a stand-up show he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, titled Brett Goldstein Grew Up in A Strip Club.

Brett started his acting career with short films and soon landed a role in his first feature film, a thriller he also wrote called Wish You Were Here.

In 2009, he made his TV debut in two episodes of ITV’s long-running police drama The Bill.

He then made appearances in several comedy series, such as the BBC’s Uncle and E4’s Drifters.

But his first big break wasn’t until he starred as Tom in Ricky Gervais’ 2013 TV show Derek.

In an interview with Esquire at the time, Brett opened up about his nerves on set.

He admitted he was very nervous on his first day, as it was his first major TV role and involved working with Ricky Gervais. He performed a single take, and Gervais immediately said it was perfect and they could continue.

He basically said he had a good feeling about the initial cut – he liked how it looked and felt, and didn’t want a lot of unnecessary changes or options. He wanted to trust his instincts and keep the process moving forward.

It’s truly inspiring, and I can definitely relate – some days I feel that way, and others I don’t. Eventually, you just have to have faith, because overthinking can be exhausting.

In 2015, Brett both wrote and acted in the superhero movie SuperBob, and also made a cameo appearance on Catherine Tate’s show Nan.

He received the BIFA award for Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for his performance as Brendan in the comedy film, Adult Life Skills.

After two years, he landed a role in Doctor Who and then created the popular podcast, Films To Be Buried.

TV producer Bill Lawrence hired Brett as a writer for the 2020 Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso.

However, he almost passed up the opportunity due to the short notice.

He told Entertainment Weekly: ‘I was like, I’ve got some gigs. I’ve got some stand-up shows booked.

‘And he was like, “You’re f**king mad if you turn this down for some stand-up gigs”.’

Brett began his career as a writer and story editor. He unexpectedly landed the role of Rory Kent after sending in an audition without being asked.

He admitted to Vulture that he was surprised the project came together, and even more surprised that he ended up playing the role of Roy. He explained that as they were writing the script, he began to feel a strong connection to the character and realized he could truly embody him.

On my last day working on the show, I secretly recorded myself acting out five scenes as the character Roy. The next day, I emailed Bill Lawrence, suggesting I could play the part, but also giving him an easy out – he could just ignore the email and I wouldn’t bring it up again.

I received a message from him around 3 AM, where he expressed interest and said he wanted to move forward. Fortunately, everything ended up working out.

Brett won Emmy Awards for his supporting role in the comedy series Ted Lasso in both 2021 and 2022.

Brett teamed up with Will Bridges, a writer from Black Mirror, to create and write a six-episode science fiction series called Soulmates for AMC.

In 2022, he signed a long-term contract with Warner Bros. Television. He later made a cameo appearance as Hercules in a scene after the credits of the movie Thor: Love and Thunder.

With so many credits under his belt, Brett has managed to earn an impressive net worth of $5M.

As for his love life, he tends to keep his personal life away from the spotlight.

Brett publicly revealed he was dating comedian Beth Rylance when he mentioned her while accepting his first Emmy Award in 2021.

He explained that he was explicitly instructed not to use profanity, and as a result, his speech would be very brief.

‘Beth, I love you.’

But the next year, news came out that they had broken up, shortly after he got the part in Thor.

According to a source, both individuals are currently focused on their careers and very busy, which made it difficult to maintain the relationship.

Now he is said to be ‘growing close’ to his Office Romance co-star Jennifer.

Their on-screen romance is well-known, but people are also talking about a strong connection between them in real life.

Jennifer and Ben Affleck separated in 2025, and sources say she’s been spending a lot of time with a comedian even before they began working on a project together.

Everyone on set knew Brett and Jennifer Lopez clicked instantly, and their amazing chemistry is clearly visible in the film, according to a source.

‘They were very touchy, feely, and always laughing, and everyone suspected they were hooking up.’

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what I heard! Someone at the wrap party told me that they were totally glued to each other the entire night – during dinner, while everyone was having drinks, just… all over each other with the whole cast there! I knew it! They’re definitely something special!

Filming was a really good time for her, and exactly what she needed after her relationship with Ben Affleck. He definitely cheered her up.

People often joked that Brett was like the British equivalent of Ben. She clearly enjoyed his British personality and felt well cared for while they were filming.

Daily Mail has contacted Jennifer’s and Brett’s representatives for comment.

In September 2024, the pair attended a performance of the Broadway show Oh, Mary! to see their colleague, Betty Gilpin, on stage.

After filming wrapped up, Jennifer shared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that Brett was the best person she’d ever kissed in a scene.

She excitedly shared that she recently filmed a movie with Brett Goldstein, and playfully described him as a fantastic kisser.

An official synopsis for the movie was shared by Netflix in a Monday Instagram post.

The new Netflix film, OFFICE ROMANCE, starring Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein, is a funny and steamy romantic comedy. It’s about two people who are dedicated to their jobs but find themselves falling for each other, leading to some complicated situations. The film will be available to stream on June 5th.

Jennifer stars as Jackie Cruz, a CEO who develops feelings for a new hire, Daniel Blanchflower, portrayed by Brett.

She shared with People magazine on Monday that Jackie is a dedicated worker who is very disciplined and doesn’t want anything to disrupt her focus.

Originally from the Bronx, he also noted that while certain aspects might have been helpful, the realities of being a CEO – for Jackie and for himself – were quite different. Despite his strong work ethic, he emphasizes the importance of work-life balance and making time for loved ones.

The actress immediately agreed to the film, describing it as a timeless love story with a contemporary, witty edge. Despite being very busy with other commitments, she prioritized this project, saying they found a way to make it happen. She believes the movie is exactly what audiences are looking for right now.

She also raved about her co-star.

The siren said Brett ‘brought an amazing calming and self assured energy’ to his performance.

‘There’s something very grounded and natural about him,’ she said.

He didn’t need to force any romance or humor; his natural wit and charm shone through, making everything feel genuine.

Brett shared that he and Joe Kelly wrote the script for Office Romance with Jennifer in mind.

We were discussing the greatest romantic comedy star, and immediately agreed it was Jennifer Lopez,” the actor revealed, adding that they’ve admired her for a long time.

We came up with the entire concept for the movie during a single, long train ride. It’s simple to write a romantic comedy when you’re picturing Jennifer Lopez – she’s a natural at it. Our goal was just to create something witty and clever that she’d be interested in starring in.

Director Ol Parker shared with People that the movie is intentionally a bit more extravagant than viewers might anticipate for a Jennifer Lopez film. He said Lopez was enthusiastic about taking on that challenge and brought a lot of humor to the role.

Office Romance will premiere globally on Netflix on Friday, June 5, 2026.
