HBO Max Users Have Just 2 Weeks Left to Watch a 10/10 Sci-Fi Masterpiece

HBO Max took down a number of well-known movies in March, like V for Vendetta and The Whale, and has more scheduled to be removed by the end of April. This is common for streaming services, as they often lose the rights to show certain content when licensing agreements expire. One notable science fiction film is also leaving the platform.

Later this month, subscribers will no longer be able to watch a popular collection of movies, including titles like Inception, Spider-Man, Little Miss Sunshine, and Ex Machina, the impressive first film directed by Alex Garland. Garland is a Hollywood writer with decades of experience, best known for writing 28 Days Later, and Ex Machina is a fantastic debut for a first-time director.

Okay, look, if you haven’t seen Alex Garland’s latest, stop what you’re doing. Seriously. This film isn’t just good, it’s a masterpiece – and it’s racked up awards, including an Oscar. I’m giving it a perfect 10 out of 10, and you only have two weeks to catch it on HBO Max before it’s gone. Trust me, you need to see this one.

A Science-Fiction Masterpiece

Released in 2014, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina was a hit with both critics and audiences. It earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 92% approval rating and audiences scoring it at 86%. The film also received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Visual Effects, ultimately winning the award for its impressive creation of a realistic android character.

Alex Garland’s film, Ex Machina, centers around Caleb Smith, a programmer chosen by his unusual boss, Nathan Bateman, to evaluate Ava, a highly advanced robot, using the Turing test. As Caleb interacts with Ava, he develops feelings for her and ultimately assists in her escape from Nathan’s control.

The movie Ex Machina was highly praised for several reasons. Beyond its stunning visual effects, which convincingly created the appearance of an android version of Alicia Vikander, the film also featured strong performances from its actors and thoughtfully examined how artificial intelligence can contribute to the dehumanization and objectification of women.

Domhnall Gleeson delivers a much more restrained performance as Caleb Smith in Ex Machina than he did playing the over-the-top villain Hux in the Star Wars sequels. Caleb is a solitary man who sees himself as a good person, even though he often acts selfishly and masks it with acts of kindness.

Alicia Vikander, as Ava, interacts with Caleb while concealing her advanced intelligence and self-awareness from both him and her maker. Her performance skillfully portrays a character who is both subtly manipulative and sincerely trying to connect with Caleb.

Oscar Isaac truly shines in Ex Machina, portraying a wildly unpredictable and ethically flawed tech billionaire who sees his creations – and people – as tools to control.

Sonoya Mizuno, who recently appeared in Star Wars: Visions, delivers a quietly powerful performance as Bateman’s maid, Kyoko. Though a small role, her subtle acting significantly enhances the development and emotional journeys of all three main characters.

Even if you’ve already watched Ex Machina on HBO Max, it’s worth revisiting. Knowing the twist changes how you see the story. The first time, you experience it through Caleb’s eyes, unsure of what’s happening. But on a second viewing, you understand everything, seeing the story from Nathan’s perspective and knowing the truth behind his experiment.
