Simpsons’ First Major Death Changed Lisa Forever

Three decades ago this week, The Simpsons shocked viewers with its first major character death, which significantly altered at least one character and the show itself for good. Although The Simpsons has since presented numerous emotional scenes capable of tugging at heartstrings, it is not typically associated with being overly serious, especially during its early episodes. Additionally, in its initial stages, the series lacked extended character arcs or substantial development.

Six years into the show’s run, a significant shift occurred when one character met their untimely end. This twist took both the audience and the show’s characters by surprise, even shocking us all. The residents of Springfield felt the impact deeply, with Lisa being particularly affected, while established characters like Dr. Hibbert had to navigate this new context. Though it happened three decades ago, its effects are still resonating in today’s episodes of The Simpsons.

The Simpsons Killed Off Bleeding Gums Murphy in 1995

It Was A Shock For Everyone

Despite numerous character deaths over its run, it’s surprising that the main character wasn’t killed until the sixth season. The unfortunate honor of being the first major character to meet his end goes to Bleeding Gums Murphy, who was killed in season 6, episode 22 titled “‘Round Springfield”, which aired on April 30, 1995. This unexpected death left viewers stunned, as no character had been killed off so dramatically before, especially not one who had been an important supporting character since the beginning of the series.

In much the same way as many characters in Springfield from The Simpsons appear permanent fixtures, it seemed like Bleeding Gums Murphy would be ever-present; given that the characters don’t age on this show, it felt natural that they could live forever. However, despite being a minor character, the writers decided to end his life as part of a significant storyline for Lisa. Since killing off one of the Simpson family members wasn’t an option, Bleeding Gums Murphy was the most suitable choice for creating such an emotional impact.

Bleeding Gums Murphy’s Death Has An Indelible Impact On The Simpsons’ Lisa

Lisa Was Forever Changed

Apart from her family, whom she felt didn’t always appreciate her genius, Lisa held Bleeding Gums Murphy in a unique place – someone she deeply admired and cherished. As a gifted saxophone player, Lisa sought a musical guide, and she found one in the enigmatic Bleeding Gums, an obscure yet accomplished jazz saxophonist who had been mentored by the legendary Blind Willie Witherspoon. For six seasons, under his guidance, Lisa blossomed into a soulful and passionate saxophone player. His passing affected her more than anyone else.

It was particularly tragic that Bleeding Gums passed away during Lisa’s school performance. In a touching and ironic turn of events, as he lay critically ill in the hospital, this experienced jazz musician handed his saxophone to his protegee for use in her recital. It was this very instrument that inspired her to take the stage and perform a solo that, even if only temporarily, made her shine in the spotlight.

She discovered later that Bleeding Gums had died while she was performing passionately, and although it was terribly sad, it seemed symbolically appropriate that he passed on just after passing the torch to the next promising saxophonist from Springfield. The only one who attended his funeral, Lisa made a promise to ensure that the name of Bleeding Gums Murphy would be remembered by everyone.

Bleeding Gums Murphy’s Death Changed The Complexity Of The Show

It Brought Lisa & Bart Closer Together

As a devoted cinephile, I couldn’t help but feel the impact of Bleeding Gums Murphy’s demise ripple through me, just as it did for Lisa. While The Simpsons has dabbled in somber tones from time to time, it was never its usual flair. However, when Bleeding Gums took his final bow, we witnessed a side of the show that tackled the heavy, poignant subject of death with a delicate touch and profound thoughtfulness. Unlike a passing joke, Bleeding Gums’ farewell was handled with the respect and solemnity it deserved. And unlike other significant events in the series that often fade into the background by the next episode, his death left an indelible mark on Lisa, shaping her in ways that resonated deeply.

In a touching incident, the demise of Bleeding Gums brought Lisa and Bart even closer despite their contrasting characters and frequent disagreements. Throughout the series of “The Simpsons,” they have been supportive of each other in various ways. One such instance was following the jazz musician’s death. To honor her mentor, Lisa sought to acquire Bleeding Gums Murphy’s only album, Sax on the Beach, for Springfield’s jazz station. However, she fell short of funds after Comic Book Guy raised the price. Moved by this, Bart selflessly purchased the album using the $500 he’d won instead of a coveted pog. This heartwarming act not only showcases their bond but also emphasizes the love they share for each other.
