‘Parasite’ (2019)
Stream on May 1
The Kim clan endures hardships due to poverty, dwelling in a modest, confined apartment, constantly seeking solutions to their predicament. Ki-woo, the eldest son of the Kims, forges documents and secures a job as an English tutor for the affluent Park family’s daughter. Devising a plan to extricate themselves from poverty, they strategize on infiltrating the Park household by hiding their familial connections. As each member of the Kim family manages to secure employment with the influential Park family, they believe their luck has changed. However, as they begin to unearth the secrets within the Park family, their world begins to crumble, leading to distrust and conflict among themselves.
The movie “Parasite” is a must-watch, having left its mark at the 2020 Oscars with numerous record-breaking victories in the international feature category. Although not every Oscar-winning film becomes iconic, “Parasite” stands out as an exceptional dark comedy that seamlessly blends drama and a touch of horror. It delves deeply into topics like class differences and family dynamics. If you haven’t already seen it, you can catch “Parasite” now on Paramount+.
‘The Ghost and the Darkness’ (1996)
Stream on May 1
The film titled “The Ghost and the Darkness” is inspired by a real-life event involving two lions, famously known as the “Tsavo man-eaters.” In 1898, these lions were responsible for the deaths of approximately 130 workers constructing the Kenya-Uganda railway. The narrative unfolds around Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson (portrayed by Val Kilmer), who supervises the project, but is compelled to cease operations due to the lethal lions. Subsequently, British hunter Charles Remington (played by Michael Douglas) is summoned to assist in hunting the dangerous felines. However, their initial attempts at hunting prove unsuccessful, forcing them to venture closer to eliminate the man-eating predators.
Initially failing to impress at the box office, The Ghost and the Darkness has since garnered a new wave of admiration. Its captivating narrative, drawn from real-life events involving man-eating lions, keeps viewers hooked. The African setting is meticulously depicted, combining stunning natural scenery with an unsettling air of mystery. Furthermore, the collaboration between Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer is noteworthy, delivering top-notch performances that stand among their finest ever. Despite its flaws, the compelling storyline, stellar acting, and African backdrop make The Ghost and the Darkness a must-watch for those yet to discover this thrilling film. Now available for streaming on Paramount+.
‘Bound’ (1996)
Stream on May 1
In a nutshell, character Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who is in a turbulent relationship with a mobster, seeks an escape. On the other hand, Corky (Gina Gershon), once an ex-con and now a painter, finds herself confined to low-paying jobs due to her past. When Violet’s criminal partner brings a substantial sum of money home, she becomes interested in Corky and hatches a plan to acquire the funds. The film, titled “Bound“, is a neo-noir thriller that subtly explores lesbian eroticism. It was penned and directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski three years before they would go on to produce the groundbreaking film, The Matrix.
Unfortunately, taking on the role in the movie “Bound” may have negatively impacted Gina Gershon’s career, as she stated that she lost representation after being cautioned against accepting it. The film itself was a commercial failure at the box office. However, “Bound” seems to be ahead of its time, as it delved into a lesbian relationship, a topic that was once considered taboo but is now more widely accepted as an integral part of the arts’ examination of diverse relationships beyond heteronormative ones. “Bound” features strong performances, keeps audiences captivated, and offers plenty of unexpected twists and turns. The blend of a suspenseful crime thriller with romance made it a cult classic. You can now stream “Bound” on Paramount+.
