Sinners Leaves IMAX Soon, But Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan’s Awesome Celebration Stole the Show
As exciting as it has been, all good things, like the real estate needed for the 2025 movie schedule, must eventually conclude. With the debut of Thunderbolts in multiple premium formats on its opening weekend, it’s clear that the IMAX-enhanced run for Sinners is drawing to a close. However, the fading of this bright moment doesn’t have to be melancholic, especially since the legacy of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s tribute to the format continues.
Ryan Coogler And Michael B. Jordan Geeking Out Over Sinners Film Strips Is Pure Joy
During a press event for Warner Bros’ supernatural amusement park, representatives from IMAX had an in-depth chat with the writer/director and lead actor about the stunning 70mm footage. In fact, they were able to get their hands on special commemorative film rolls being distributed at participating large format cinemas. As you’ll find out below, their excitement for the movie is truly contagious!

Although I experienced this stunning beauty through IMAX digital, today I share the same sense of loss with fellow film enthusiasts. Just as I was left in awe by the immersive visual elements and the remarkable adaptation of Sinners into 4DX, I’m equally saddened by the upcoming Marvel movie adopting the same format. It’s a bittersweet day at the cinema indeed.
The statement “Thunderbolts” isn’t being criticized because it’s labeled as “Filmed For IMAX.” If you recall the debate over “Superman’s” IMAX marketing, this means that while Marvel’s new film wasn’t shot on IMAX film like “Sinners,” it was made with the IMAX format in mind. Frankly, I’m looking forward to watching a comic movie that appears to have been designed to make the most of the IMAX experience.
Despite this shift away from IMAX screens, let me refer to another grand-scale event that significantly contributed to this immersive experience’s popularity. Although it may seem like the twilight of “Sinners”, remember that the darkest hour comes just before the dawn, and trust me, the dawn is on its way.

Sinners Already Has An IMAX Revival Planned, And It’s Happening Way Sooner Than You’d Think
Just like how Christopher Nolan’s movies such as “The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” and the upcoming “Oppenheimer” are returning to IMAX 70mm for limited showings, the film “Sinners” is joining their esteemed ranks. Warner Bros.’ President of Global Distribution has made an official announcement that this special run will take place from May 15th to May 21st, and here’s what he had to say about it:
Based on audience feedback, we’ve taken notice and made adjustments. If any movie deserved to be viewed in an extraordinary, grand-scale format, it’s ‘Sinners.’ Ryan has crafted a film that has resonated with fans who admire the intricate work involved in making films for this expansive IMAX screen. In order to provide everyone with the chance to view it—or revisit it—we’re offering it in 70mm IMAX format.
I can’t help but feel a sense of shared enthusiasm for this movie, and it seems that appreciation for it isn’t waning anytime soon. It almost feels like Warner Bros. and IMAX heard the requests for a Sinners re-release around Halloween, but chose to bring us the chilling delight a tad early. While I wouldn’t be shocked if an October engagement is also planned, considering this 70mm revival is poised to make a clean sweep yet again.
If your schedule allows today and you’re close to an IMAX theater, consider watching “Sinners” in its intended format. Alternatively, if you prefer planning ahead, grab your tickets for the upcoming IMAX 70mm screening while they’re still available. If you were impressed by the initial release, wait until you see what’s in store!
