DCU Cancellation: The Penguin Season 2 Now More Likely!

Due to an unforeseen cancellation of the DCU project, there’s a higher chance than ever that season 2 of “The Penguin” will take flight. The DCU, under James Gunn’s leadership, is progressing steadily, with its Gods and Monsters chapter paving the way for an expansive cinematic universe. Titles like “Creature Commandos” and “Superman” are laying the groundwork. On the other hand, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” franchise is advancing at a slightly slower pace. The release date for “The Batman – Part II,” which was originally set for October 1st, 2027, has been pushed back twice due to delays.

Shortly following Daniel Craig’s departure from the production, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the Sgt. Rock film within the DC Universe had been scrapped. This cancellation was unexpected since high-profile names like Craig, director Luca Guadagnino, and Colin Farrell were associated with the movie. Even Creature Commandos, which included a cameo by Sgt. Rock, hinted at the live-action movie acknowledging this character. The DC Studios’ choice to cancel Sgt. Rock indicates that unlike the DCEU and the MCU, the DCU is not afraid to abandon projects that aren’t thriving behind the scenes.

However, the exceptional quality, outstanding performances, and jaw-dropping finale of The Penguin have left viewers eager for more. Although a second season of The Penguin hasn’t been announced yet, all major players involved have hinted at the possibility of continuing the story.

Colin Farrell Won’t Play Two DC Characters Simultaneously

After Daniel Craig left the project, there were reports that Colin Farrell might take the lead in Sgt. Rock. Even though Farrell’s character, Oz Cobb, will be back for The Batman – Part II, it’s likely that his commitments for Sgt. Rock would have made it difficult for him to also appear in season 2 of The Penguin, given the demanding nature of playing the character over an entire series.

Due to unexpected delays with “The Batman – Part II” and “The Batman – Part III,” it appears that additional spinoffs featuring the caped crusader are less likely for now. However, this could pave the way for a second season of “The Penguin.” Colin Farrell may reprise his role as a supporting character in “The Batman – Part II,” potentially setting up the continuation of Oz Cobbs’ story, which could be further explored in another season of its own series. Meanwhile, Sgt. Rock might continue to make appearances in future DCU movies and shows set during World War II.
