Meghan Markle Is Still Using Her Royal Title. One Reason Her Feelings Toward The Royal Family And Her Actions May Seem Contradictory
There’s been plenty of chatter about Meghan Markle’s last name ever since her lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan” was announced on the 2025 TV schedule, and a clip of her correcting Mindy Kaling became popular online. This conversation has grown to encompass her royal title as well, with some noting the apparent contradiction in her and Prince Harry using HRH titles, even though they have stepped back from their royal duties.
Reports to Page Six indicate that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, are still utilizing the HRH titles (His/Her Royal Highness) even after moving to the U.S., in contrast to an agreement reached with Queen Elizabeth II. One source found this action “disgraceful” and “shocking,” given Meghan Markle’s apparent disaffection towards royal life, as they expressed to the trade.
Meghan appears to hold strong disdain towards the British Royal Family and England itself, but she still uses the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH) for her own advantages. This behavior is shocking. Everything about her seems to be a confusing mix.
The matter has surfaced more recently as Jamie Kern Lima, Meghan Markle’s friend, unveiled a gift basket she received with a note stating “Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.” Nonetheless, a representative for the Sussexes contests that this was a commercial exchange. They clarify that the basket was actually delivered before the commencement of Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever.
It seems that some members of the former royal family may privately refer to themselves using their HRH titles in personal correspondence, but a source close to Prince Harry and Meghan Markles clarified that they do not ask people to address them as such. Instead, they prefer to be referred to as “Ma’am” and “Sir”. Occasionally, others might still use the HRH title for them.
Meghan finds herself well-integrated within the royal family’s platform and structure, but it doesn’t resonate with Americans in quite the same way. It feels unusual for her team to be called a “private office” and for them to address her formally as “Sir” and “Ma’am”. A more casual approach, such as asking people simply to call her “Meghan”, might seem more fitting in American culture.
It’s interesting to note that people often refer to Meghan Markle by just her first name, which appears to be a deliberate move to sidestep any confusion about whether she is the ‘Suits’ actress Meghan Markle or Prince Harry’s wife and mother of his royal children, known as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. In the premiere of her new podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder,” she simply identifies herself as “Meghan.
In 2020, when she and Prince Harry decided to step back from their royal responsibilities, Buckingham Palace issued a statement that disclosed a supposed understanding they had reached with the queen. This understanding was conveyed in the statement.
Instead of using their HRH (Her Royal Highness/His Royal Highness) titles, The Sussexes have chosen to step down from their roles within the royal family and will no longer be active members.
A confidential source claimed that Prince Harry found it preposterous since he was born with his title. There are rumors suggesting that Prince William might take away their HRH titles when he ascends to the throne, as it’s said he strongly dislikes Meghan Markle.
Time alone can confirm whether this is accurate, but for now, it appears that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to relish their HRH titles, though they do so quietly. They are also exploring avenues beyond the royal lifestyle.
