The Pitt star Supriya Ganesh reveals battle with gender dysphoria and pronoun struggles after exiting hit HBO show

The Pitt star Supriya Ganesh has opened up about their battle with gender dysphoria.

In an essay for Vulture, the 28-year-old writer, who is queer and uses she/they pronouns, described how they began to experience discomfort with their gender identity after moving from India to the U.S. to attend college in 2015.

‘I’d never questioned my gender before I came to America,’ she wrote.

I moved to the U.S. hoping to freely explore my identity and sexuality without the judgment or shame I’d experienced before. While that was partly true, I also started to struggle with feelings of discomfort and unease with my body.

The actress said that she didn’t identify with labels like nonbinary and genderqueer.

As a lifestyle expert, I often talk about authenticity, and this really resonates with me. I always felt strongly connected to my femininity, but I never quite fit into the traditional expectations of how a woman ‘should’ be, especially as defined by Western culture. It wasn’t about rejecting being a woman, but about feeling uncomfortable with the prescribed performance of it all.

It often feels like people in American entertainment aren’t judged for who they are, but for what they represent.

Ganesh discovered a gender identity that felt right for her after watching an interview with Lily Gladstone, the actress from Killers of the Flower Moon.

Ganesh reported that Gladstone shared in an interview she uses both she/her and they/them pronouns as a way to honor her Blackfoot heritage and challenge traditional ideas about gender.

I’d encountered people using combinations of she/they or they/them pronouns before, but this was the first time I truly felt understood and validated by it. It felt like a powerful response to a system that had historically stripped people of their identity.

I was really shocked to hear earlier this month that Ganesh, who’s been the amazing Dr. Mohan since the very beginning of the show, won’t be back for season three. It’s hard to imagine the show without him!

Earlier this week, The Pitt’s leading man Noah Wyle spoke out about Ganesh’s shock departure.

The 54-year-old actor responded to the cast change by pointing out that people frequently come and go in hospital emergency rooms.

Wyle explained to Variety at a PaleyFest event in Los Angeles on Sunday that this is something that happens with the show every year.

Okay, so I was reading an interview with Wyle, and he basically said – and this totally makes sense to me – that it’s incredibly difficult for the writers to decide how much time can pass before it doesn’t feel believable that the whole group would still be together. It’s like, how long can you jump forward and still have everyone’s lives realistically intersect? It’s a tough problem for them, but honestly, it shows how much they care about keeping the story grounded!

‘Emergency rooms have a high revolving door,’ he continued.

We’re always looking for new actors or giving current cast members bigger roles when there are changes, and we aim to keep the stories interesting and new.

I’m really sad to hear Supriya is leaving the show! She’s been such an important part of it right from the start. I’ve always loved watching her, and it’s been a joy to see her work. Everyone on set is going to miss her terribly, but we all wish her the very best in whatever she does next.

R. Scott Gemmill, a showrunner of the show, also spoke about Ganesh’s exit.

‘It’s sort of the nature of the show,’ he told the outlet.

As someone who’s observed a lot of industries, I’ve noticed a pattern in medicine – doctors and specialists often come in, share their expertise, and then move on to new challenges. We want to reflect that realistic cycle in our show, so we’re making a change to our cast to keep things authentic. It’s about mirroring how the medical world actually operates.

‘But I think it’s a great launching pad for people,’ he added. ‘And that’s the best we can do.’

Ganesh will be leaving the show after season two. However, Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Parker Ellis, will become a main cast member starting in season three.

In season two, Ganesh plays Dr. Mohan, a resident doctor. Because of this, her leaving the hospital could be a believable reason for her departure in season three.

Currently, ‘The Pitt’ is the most popular show on HBO Max in the US, surpassing ‘The Madison’ and ‘Paradise’ in viewership.
