The Heartbreaking Reason Tommy Only Said One Line To Joel In The Last Of Us S2 E3

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2, episode 3, “The Path.”

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share some insights about the scene from ‘The Last of Us’ season 2, episode 3. Gabriel Luna, who plays Tommy, discussed why most of his dialogue was omitted during his final scene with Joel (Pedro Pascal). In the heart-wrenching ending of episode 2, Joel met a brutal fate at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), while Tommy was preoccupied with defending Jackson Hole from a catastrophic attack.

The following scene in episode 3 opened with Tommy sitting by his brother’s lifeless body, but all he uttered was, “Give Sarah my love,” a poignant reference to Joel’s daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), who sadly perished in the show’s first episode.

1. “Tommy had a lot more dialogue in the original version, but it didn’t quite fit with where the story was going.”
2. “The focus of the show has shifted to other characters, so Tommy’s lines about Ellie were less relevant.”
3. “In the end, ‘Give Sarah my love’ really said everything that needed to be said.”

We did it, and as I kept doing it, I felt an intuition, like, “No, I don’t think we required any of this.” At that moment, I didn’t express my thoughts because I was engrossed in the task. It was a release for me since much of what we omitted was related to Ellie, sharing with him what had happened to her. At that point, it wasn’t so much about the scene for me, but rather the hidden meaning within the scene – “She’s hurt, she’s hurt badly, but she’ll be alright. I’ll take care of her,” which didn’t need to be said because, obviously, I would. Who else did she have? Simultaneously, it was less about Ellie in that moment than it was the transition of leadership from Pedro to Bella, Kaitlyn, myself, and the others who would carry this story forward – Isabela, Young [Mazino], and everyone. In a sense, it proved beneficial. At that moment, it was therapeutic to verbalize the reality of the production that we were embarking upon. Ultimately, what more could be said than, “Give my love to Sarah.

What This Means For The Last Of Us

Tommy Said Everything He Needed To Say In This Scene

Luna’s observations highlight that The Last of Us season 2, episode 3 deliberately employed a “fewer words, more impact” strategy when portraying Tommy bidding farewell to Joel. While including all the dialogues mentioned by Luna would have made sense and served as indicators for the show’s progression, they would have been overshadowed by the profound influence of Joel’s legacy. In addition, these lines convey information that the audience was already aware of, potentially making them superfluous and detracting from the emotional intensity of the scene.

In the scene, Tommy’s simple utterance of “Give Sarah my love” was an effective creative decision, as it effectively conveyed the depth of his emotions at that moment. This line served as a poignant reminder of how the loss of loved ones will continue to affect him and shape his future decisions. The silence that followed in the scene also added impact, communicating more profoundly than any other words could have.

Our Take On Gabriel Luna’s Comments

He Captures Why The Scene Worked So Well

As a movie critic, I must say, The Last of Us delivered a commendable scene where it chose less is more – a wise decision indeed! Overloading the dialogue about the show’s future trajectory could have overshadowed the poignant farewell between Tommy and Joel, which resonated deeply with both characters and viewers alike. A bit more time to wallow in sorrow and reflect on the loss was necessary before abruptly jumping three months ahead to Ellie in the hospital. This series consistently astounds me with its insightful narrative decisions that never forget the emotional core at its heart.
