Lost’s Most Hated Duo: The Bizarre Nikki & Paulo Mystery Unraveled!
In the early 2000s, a popular cultural phenomenon revolved around a story about a group of survivors from a plane crash stranded on a mysterious island. The group numbered around 40, along with other victims of the shipwreck or crash. Native inhabitants of the island would secretly infiltrate the survivor camps and kidnap people, preferring pregnant women and children.
During its third season, Lost brought in two new characters to address fan curiosity about the fate of the other crash survivors. The series continued to revolve around the same 10-15 individuals who were central to all significant events. Enter Nikki and Paulo, who made their debut in the third episode as minor figures on the island. Unfortunately, they were poorly received by fans at the time, causing the show’s narrative for Nikki and Paulo to falter.
Nikki and Paulo Were Introduced in Season Three of Lost
In their initial appearance, Nikki and Paulo were just two background characters. Later on, in episode “Every Man for Himself,” Paulo was seen hitting golf balls on the beach. Desmond came to borrow one of his clubs, with Hurley’s approval. This made Paulo believe Desmond was about to save the day. He handed him a five-iron, so that if Desmond perished in the jungle, Paulo wouldn’t have to search for it – a rather insensitive comment, indeed. However, this remark subtly revealed the resentment Paulo harbored towards the main camp survivors, who he considered as the “heroes,” because they were constantly taking center stage and leaving him and Nikki on the sidelines. This feeling became more evident in the episode “The Cost of Living.
Episode | Title | Air Date | IMDb Rating |
---|---|---|---|
3×03 | “Further Instructions” | October 18, 2006 | 7.8/10 |
3×04 | “Every Man for Himself” | October 25, 2006 | 8.2/10 |
3×05 | “The Cost of Living” | November 1, 2008 | 8.0/10 |
3×06 | “I Do” | November 8, 2008 | 8.5/10 |
In “The Cost of Living,” when Nikki proposes that she and Paulo join in on their adventure to the newly found hatch called the Pearl, Paulo expresses reluctance. Nikki counters, “You always complain about feeling left out. Here’s your chance.” Upon reaching the hatch, Locke and Sayid search for a method to contact other hatches in order to locate their missing individuals. After viewing the orientation video, Nikki proposes using the other TV screens to display images of the other hatches. This practical idea enabled them to connect with the communication hatch, where they briefly caught a glimpse of a man wearing an eyepatch before he damaged the camera.
In “I Do,” Nikki and Paulo assist in burying Eko’s body. Few lines of dialogue from Nikki and none from Paulo were enough for Lost viewers to dislike them intensely. With only four appearances on the show, three of which were largely forgettable, they primarily served as background characters, contributing little. However, the creators hinted subtly at who Nikki and Paulo were and their connection to the larger narrative, but chose to reveal this slowly.
Why Did Fans Hate Nikki and Paulo?
Viewers eagerly wait for episodes to gather more clues about the island’s mystery. Consequently, the Nikki and Paulo storyline seems unexpected and hurried. They had minimal screen time before they were suddenly written off the series. To many viewers, Nikki and Paulo leave such a faint impression that newcomers often wonder why they are disliked so much. Admittedly, they revealed themselves to be unappealing characters with little to commend them, but this revelation came after their fate had already been sealed due to the strong negative reaction from fans. When discussing the controversial new arrivals, Damon Lindelof stated, “Given the backlash, we felt compelled to tidy up the mess.
Interestingly enough, Nikki and Paulo were introduced due to viewers continuously inquiring about the remaining plane crash survivors. Despite complaints about there being over 40 survivors, with only a handful getting significant screen time, these characters emerged as a response. However, when they appeared on the scene, the audience found them off-putting, claiming they were forcefully inserted into the cast. Damon Lindelof commented, “The audience disliked the characters even before they spoke, as it seemed they were gatecrashing the party.” It’s plausible that viewers anticipated the creators to pick a random extra from the beach and make them the main character of the series, but finding fault with Nikki and Paulo for being “too good-looking” might be just as unreasonable.
It appears that the main reason for such a strongly negative reaction from viewers might be connected to how season three was broadcast in 2006. ABC initially showed the first six episodes during fall, but then paused airing the rest of the season for three months. This sudden halt left fans feeling frustrated because the limited screen time given to Nikki and Paulo seemed to encroach upon the screen time they were accustomed to seeing their favorite main cast characters enjoy. The creators acknowledged this fan backlash, with Lindelof stating, “It would have been simple to ignore them ever existed, like the cougar on [the second season of] 24. But that’s not Lost.” They eventually chose to resolve the Nikki and Paulo storyline in a single episode, focusing entirely on them, which was likely a more satisfying approach than the initial introduction of these characters.
Audiences Felt “Exposé” Was a Waste of Time
After “The Man From Tallahassee,” viewers expressed dissatisfaction with “Exposé.” Instead of advancing the story, they felt it introduced new characters and seemed more like unnecessary filler. The slow pace of the episode, without much progression in the plot, left fans frustrated. Regarding Nikki and Paolo, Lindelof admitted that audiences rejected them because they were introduced as if they had been there all along. In response, the creators decided to demonstrate that they had indeed always been part of the story. Throughout “Exposé,” Nikki and Paulo are subtly inserted into some of “Lost”‘s most iconic moments from early seasons by using previously unseen footage from older episodes alongside on-set footage featuring Nikki and Paolo.
Episode | Title | Air Date | IMDb Rating |
---|---|---|---|
3×14 | “Exposé” | Mar 28, 2007 | 7.9/10 |
Apart from demonstrating to viewers that Nikki and Paulo had been present all along, they reintroduced secondary characters such as Dr. Artz and Ethan to delve deeper into their stories. Fans were given a glimpse into Artz’s work, where he was attempting to catalog and study the various species on the island. In one scene, Ethan is seen wearing a University of Wisconsin T-shirt, offering clothing to those who had lost their luggage, simply being kind. Ethan can also be observed watching Jack’s famous “live together, die alone” speech, taking notes and reporting back. The creators affirm that this episode aligns with the larger narrative, stating, “The events since Eko’s death [earlier in the season] suggest that the island is accumulating the souls of individuals who may not be capable of redemption.
The writers additionally aimed to reveal to viewers the plot they had prepared for the duo portraying the con artist couple. Initially, this centered around her TV show titled “Exposé,” which revolved around crime-solving strippers. To preserve their original plans and offer a justification for Nikki and Paulo’s appearance in the series to fans, they wanted to offer Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro an opportunity to demonstrate why they were chosen for the roles. Lindelof stated, “Rodrigo and Kiele are talented actors who were being underutilized.” He added, “They deserved their chance at bat,” and indeed, they received it. Initially receiving mixed reactions, fans have since learned to appreciate the brilliance of “Exposé” upon rewatching the series.
