‘It Was Incredibly Moving’: Solo Leveling Producer Reveals Season 2’s Best Fight Scene
This year, I found myself utterly captivated by the second season of A-1 Pictures’ gripping dark fantasy anime series, . The animation was so exquisite that each fight scene left me speechless. Lately, during an interview, producer Atsushi Kaneko shared some fascinating insights into the production process, particularly focusing on one of his favorite battle sequences.
On April 30th, Crunchyroll hosted an interactive session with Kaneko and Sora Furuhashi from Aniplex studio. During a long line of questions on Reddit, user Bladguy asked which phase took the most time and effort for A-1 Pictures’ animation team while working on their project. In response, Kaneko pointed out that Episode 24, titled “Are You the King of the Humans?”, was particularly demanding due to its role as the penultimate episode of Season 2. This final installment of the Jeju Island Arc featured a thrilling confrontation between Sung Jinwoo and an enormous ant army.
Solo Leveling Anime Producer Lists Sung Jinwoo vs. The Ant King as Season 2’s Best Fight
In Season 2, the storyline known as the “Jeju Island Arc” follows humanity’s struggle to contain a swarm of insects that poses a significant threat, potentially spreading into populated regions in both Korea and Japan. Initially reluctant to join, Sung Jinwoo changes his mind when only a handful of hunters manage to survive the battles. The remaining ants are then faced off against by Jinwoo in a series of intense encounters, culminating in a thrilling final showdown. This nine-minute sequence is particularly noteworthy for its outstanding animation and was singled out by Kaneko as particularly impactful. “Episode 24 really left an impression on me,” Kaneko said. “It seemed like Jinwoo had delved into something much more profound, revealing another facet of his character entirely.
Standout in Episode 24 was its extensive use of animation frames compared to other episodes. While I can’t recall the exact average number, most episodes of Solo Leveling usually featured between 8,000 and 10,000 frames. However, Episode 24 boasted a staggering 17,000 frames, significantly surpassing its counterparts. Additionally, the episode employed a vivid color palette to enhance dramatic tension and intensify key moments for viewers. Kaneko commented that the scene featuring Jinwoo in battle, with red and blue symbolizing conflict and a purple backdrop establishing the mood, was particularly poignant, as he had also highlighted on X (formerly Twitter).
Crunchyroll played a role as a co-producer for the anime series ‘Solo Leveling’, and this collaboration has been profitable for the popular streaming platform. The 24th episode of ‘Solo Leveling’ is currently the most popular anime episode on their platform, with more than half a million upvotes. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, Season 3 of ‘Solo Leveling’ seems to be on its way. As per Le’s recent update video, fans might have to wait for a while before they can watch Season 3. However, the humorous tone of his message indicates that there is still reason to stay optimistic. Moreover, creators Kaneko and Furuhashi admit that ‘Solo Leveling’ has gained an enormous global fanbase since its debut in 2024, stating that they may not encounter a project with such scale and influence again. They describe it as a unique series.
Solo Leveling is currently streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll.
