You Won’t Believe This Val Kilmer Movie Is Based on a True Story!

The world of entertainment has been struck hard by the untimely passing of a notable figure. At the age of 65, he met an unfortunate end due to pneumonia, yet his creative imprint remains vast. This legacy encompasses films such as “Willow” and others, which have solidified him as a cultural icon.

One lesser-known film from 1996 that fans should definitely watch is titled “The Ghost and the Darkness“. This movie offered a blend of drama, action, and suspense as it followed Kilmer’s character on a mission to hunt two deadly man-eating lions. What’s intriguing about this film is its deep, compelling backstory.

What Is The Ghost and the Darkness About?

Val Kilmer‘s John Henry Patterson Hunts Two Lions Killing Railway Workers in Kenya

In 1898, Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson arrived in Tsavo, Kenya, serving as a military engineer overseeing a railway project. However, terror transformed the situation when he discovered lions were preying on workers. Despite killing one, the attacks continued. The locals believed these creatures to be supernatural, and even Patterson started questioning if there was some otherworldly aspect to the deaths and the surrounding apex predator.

Not only one lion was attacking the camp; there were actually two of them. They audaciously attacked during daylight hours, even surviving gunshots. These lions, known as “Ghost” and “Darkness,” were renowned for their stealth, but they showed no fear in prowling the open, dusty plains to make a more menacing statement. As a result, the workers stopped working, the bosses pressured Patterson, and he found himself unable to call for reinforcements. Money was running low, and he couldn’t risk damaging his reputation or failing to get paid. After all, he wanted to return home to meet his newborn child.

Fortunately, Michael Douglas’ character, Remington, stepped in to assist in the film “The Ghost and the Darkness,” much like how a team was required in the “Jaws” series to combat nature. They joined forces with the Kenyan foreman Samuel (played by John Kani), eventually tracking down and killing the lions. However, Remington unfortunately didn’t make it; he was fatally shot. This left a bittersweet conclusion, as the project was successfully completed, safety and security were restored, and Patterson returned to his family.

Was The Ghost and the Darkness Based on a True Story?

The Real John Henry Patterson Had to Hunt the Lions in 1898

The movie “The Ghost and the Darkness” presents a dramatized version of the infamous Tsavo man-eating lions. These were two male lions that caused havoc among construction workers near Tsavo, in East Africa, during the construction of the Uganda-Mombasa Railway in 1898. Many Indian and African laborers feared for their lives due to these attacks. Similar to the film, Patterson, as depicted in the semi-biography “The Man-eaters of Tsavo,” was also involved in the project and documented these events in his account.

For nearly a year, the team tried various methods such as bonfires, fencing, and traps without success. In truth, Patterson managed to rally soldiers for the purpose of hunting and killing lions. He used their skins as rugs and sold them to Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History where their skulls remain on exhibit. While the movie enhanced the story with drama and fantasy to create a mythology, there was much debate about Patterson’s claims.

It appears that the reported number of deaths couldn’t be confirmed as accurate, with certain evidence indicating fewer than hundreds may have perished. Meanwhile, scientists are still puzzled about why lions began attacking humans. Some theories propose that illness among their usual prey made them seek out humans, while others suggest that the bodies of deceased humans found near rivers might have led the lions to develop a taste for human flesh by feeding on carcasses in those areas.

It was suggested that one might have had a tooth infection, prompting the other to seek an less challenging prey among humans instead. Regardless, Patterson’s book was highly appreciated by Hollywood. The movie “Men Against the Sun”, filmed in Kenya in 1952, portrayed this hunt. That same year, “Bwana Devil” was also shot in 3D and told a similar story. Additionally, “Killers of Kilimanjaro”, produced in 1959, drew inspiration from it as well. In conclusion, the path that Patterson (a former World War I soldier who served with the Jewish army), laid out is still a captivating one. He passed away in 1947 at the age of 79, but his legacy will live on, remembered for his resilient, victorious, and almost invincible portrayal.

The Ghost and the Darkness Can Be Streamed on Paramount+ and Prime Video.
