Matthew Gray Gubler Is Returning To Criminal Minds, But His New CBS Show Just Got Some Bad News
For more than a decade, Matthew Gray Gubler has been a familiar face on TV screens, primarily as Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. Since late 2024, there have been plans for him to revisit his old CBS stage. Regrettably, he won’t be appearing in primetime television by the close of the 2025 TV schedule due to some production delays with his upcoming show. However, fans can take comfort in anticipating his return alongside his former Criminal Minds co-stars in the near future.
Spencer Reid Is Coming Back To Criminal Minds
The announcement came towards the end of 2024 that actor Matthew Gray Gubler would once again embody Spencer Reid for season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, a series available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription starting May. Fans eagerly anticipating his return can now rejoice, as the hint in Season 2 and showrunner Erica Messer’s statements have been confirmed.
In essence, Gubler’s announcement hints that he will appear in just one episode of Season 3. Therefore, viewers shouldn’t expect him to be a regular feature each week. Instead, they should enjoy the potential for intense violence and F-bombs when watching Criminal Minds on Paramount+ instead of its original broadcast on CBS. Whether this could lead to further appearances in the future is uncertain, as it depends on what sparks Reid’s return initially. For now, we can only guess.
It’s clear that we won’t be left wondering if Gubler will return to CBS by the end of the year.
Einstein Delayed By CBS
As a dedicated cinephile, I remember back in 2024 when I was fortunate enough to secure the lead role for CBS’ “Einstein,” portraying Lew Einstein, the grandson of the renowned physicist. This intriguing crime procedural got a series order and was scheduled to debut during the 2025-2026 TV season. However, according to recent reports from TVLine, my return to CBS has been postponed until the 2026-2027 season.
Despite the cancellation of shows like FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, and Blue Bloods, it appears that CBS still has too many shows for their available primetime slots, which is why Einstein wasn’t chosen, contrary to any issues with the Einstein production.
It was reported that the debut of Einstein has been postponed to 2026-2027, giving it a more extended pre-production period which could potentially enhance the new series. However, I can’t help but feel disappointed about the delay given CBS’s work on Watson and its unique take on medical procedural tales. Instead of Watson in the medical field, why not Einstein with its original twist on crime procedurals?
On Wednesday, May 7th, CBS is set to unveil their complete fall schedule, revealing the shows that have been selected for their 2025-2026 TV lineup. Meanwhile, the third season, or eighteenth overall, of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” will debut on Paramount+ on May 8th. As of now, it’s uncertain which episode will involve Spencer Reid, but the showrunner’s plans for Voit following the conclusion of Season 2 and the early renewal for Season 4 hint at a promising trajectory for the streaming series, regardless of whether or not Reid is involved.
