Look, as a big fan of Vincent D’Onofrio’s work as Wilson Fisk, it’s been really frustrating to hear he won’t be popping up in the multiverse. It’s been on his mind, too – ever since his run as Kingpin alongside Charlie Cox’s Daredevil on Netflix, and now with the new Daredevil: Born Again show on Disney+. But honestly, he seems to understand why that is, even if it’s still a bit disappointing.
Vincent D’Onofrio has been openly advocating for his character, Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), to have larger, more complex roles in future Marvel stories. He envisions Fisk moving beyond his initial storyline as mayor of New York City in Daredevil: Born Again and potentially causing trouble in the universes of upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
What’s stopping this from happening, and why does D’Onofrio believe it’s unlikely Marvel fans will ever see it?
Spider-Man and Kingpin Wilson Fisk Have Something In Common
Okay, so the explanation for why we keep getting different Spider-Men is… well, it’s the same old story. If you’re a fan of the Spider-Man movies, you already know: every Peter Parker and Miles Morales wants to team up with the big guys, but they’re constantly told to wait their turn. And the reason? It all comes down to those pesky studio rights – who owns which character, and what they’re allowed to do with them. It’s frustrating, but sadly, not surprising.
According to D’Onofrio, the studio doesn’t currently have full control over all the characters they need. While they’ve gained some rights recently, it’s still a challenge. He specifically mentioned the situation with Spider-Man, explaining they own the rights to many characters from that universe, but not completely to his. He believes this is slowing things down, but he’s hopeful they can resolve it in the future.
Despite recent setbacks, there’s still optimism for Vincent D’Onofrio’s potential return as Kingpin. Charlie Cox appeared as Matt Murdock (Daredevil) in Spider-Man: No Way Home, offering legal help to Peter Parker after his identity was exposed by Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home. D’Onofrio hopes he’ll get a similar chance to reprise his role in a future Marvel project.
Daredevil Showrunner Has Big Plans for Kingpin
Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, is navigating a complex situation with the Kingpin and Daredevil’s story arc. He’s exploring how to incorporate the characters into the broader multiverse of the MCU, while also emphasizing the significant and far-reaching power Kingpin ultimately wields.
Scardapane went on, insisting that the man would inevitably become Emperor Fisk, no matter the obstacles. He was certain of it.
It seems likely that Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, will eventually clash with the Avengers. Unlike Charlie Cox, D’Onofrio is very enthusiastic about the idea and understands the complexities of making that happen, which is fitting considering his character’s background.
He expressed hope that the Kingpin character will appear in a film one day. When asked about his potential involvement, he said he wasn’t sure if he would be the one to play the role, but it was a possibility.
