Sam Claflin Is Just As Excited About The New Hunger Games As Fans Are, But Learning He Just Met With The Director Has Me Wanting A Finnick Spinoff Even More
Amongst the numerous book adaptations on the horizon, what I’m particularly eager for is the upcoming movie of the latest “Hunger Games” novel titled “Sunrise on the Reaping”. The book itself has sparked excitement in fans imagining certain scenes unfold on the big screen, and the casting choices made so far have been spot-on. For instance, did you see who they cast as a younger version of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character? However, what’s even more intriguing is that Sam Claflin, who played Finnick Odair in the original films, shares our enthusiasm for this prequel.
As a film critic, I must clarify that Sam Claflin’s character Finnick Odair won’t appear in “Sunrise on the Reaping” because his character isn’t born during Haymitch’s games. However, it’s intriguing to note that the talented Mr. Claflin recently confided he had a meeting with the film’s director Francis Lawrence. Needless to say, the timeless “Hunger Games” franchise was undoubtedly part of their discussion.
Recenty, I had a chat over in L.A. with Francis, the one responsible for giving me my role. Reflecting on the past and gaining insights into the production process, as they’re gearing up for the film in Berlin, was truly thrilling. I was eagerly gathering information from him. I’d been informed about potential cast members and thought, ‘Wow, this is fantastic news!’ So, we’re all equally eager to see what unfolds.
According to Claflin’s conversation with Variety, it wasn’t too long past when he shared a meal with Lawrence, who is set to create the fifth Hunger Games movie in Germany. Claflin and Lawrence initially crossed paths over a decade ago when Lawrence chose Claflin for the role of Finnick Odair. It seems their bond remains strong.
It’s worth noting that although a Finnick Odair “Hunger Games” prequel hasn’t been officially announced yet, the intense demand for it over the years is clearly evident. Fans were eager when Haymitch’s story was revealed, and previously, Francis Lawrence has hinted at Finnick as a character he’d like to delve into more. Here’s what Sam Claflin had to share as the new “Hunger Games” series gears up for production:
More than a decade has passed since our last movie production, and it’s mind-blowing to contemplate all that has transpired in my life during this time. The experience is a significant piece of my life journey.
Sam Claflin expressed that he’s not just a fan, but a passionate admirer, of the universe Suzanne Collins built in “The Hunger Games”, and finds himself deeply connected to it. “Catching Fire” was one of the films that marked a significant milestone for the British actor, having started his journey on other large-scale productions like “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, during his twenties.
Absolutely, long before Sam Claflin was chosen for the role, Finnick Odair was already a highly popular character among fans who had read The Hunger Games books. However, Claflin’s casting has only served to intensify this adoration. After hearing about Claflin’s affection for the films and his significant impact on them, I can’t help but yearn for a Finnick prequel story.
In a different scenario, Claflin might not play the main role as the story seems to focus on the character’s youthful games at age 14. However, the actor has previously expressed that “Finnick deserved better,” suggesting potential dissatisfaction with the original portrayal. A standalone movie for this character could be an opportunity to improve Finnick’s representation.
