Jon Bernthal’s New Movie Will Blow You Away

Once again, he’s back in the limelight of pop culture. There was much excitement about his reprisal as The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again. Luckily, he didn’t disappoint, delivering raw emotion, deep pathos, and a powerful physical performance to remind fans why he’s known as an unstoppable force.

In the role of another ruthless character, it’s no wonder that Bernthal delivers another powerful, thought-provoking portrayal. His scenes may be brief, but they skillfully demonstrate a more compassionate version of Frank, offering a poignant exploration of military service and its impact on humanity.

Who Does Jon Bernthal Play in The Amateur?

Bernthal Plays Bear, a Kind But Brutal CIA Agent

Jon Bernthal portrays Bear, a CIA operative with a field background who has taken numerous lives. The relationship between Bear and Malek’s character, Charlie, surprises co-workers due to its depth. While Charlie is a mapmaker and codebreaker who usually works in the office, his intelligence once prevented Bear from meeting a grim fate on a mission. Since that instance, they have grown very close.

In another life, Charlie aspires to be like a bear – an exceptional field operative. Though he’s satisfied with his office job, there’s an undeniable allure of the action outside. Tragically, when some of the agency’s external agents accidentally take Sarah, his wife, during a botched operation, Charlie defies the organization. As a renegade, he sets out to seek vengeance against them. Unbeknownst to him, this rebellion attracts unwanted attention from the agency, eventually leading to a confrontation with Bear in Russia.

As I watched the story unfold on the silver screen, it was clear that Bear felt compelled to let Charlie embark on his mission of vengeance. He could sense the turmoil within Charlie, the need for retribution against those who had wronged him. It seemed as though fate had given Charlie a role to play, one reminiscent of the Punisher – quiet, reserved, but with an iron will when it came to meting out justice. Yet, Bear knew that Charlie’s grief and trauma were unlike any he had experienced before. He had lost friends and allies in the past, so he understood the pain that drove Charlie to this point. However, when it came to a wife, Bear realized that it was a different story altogether. Charlie needed to finish his vendetta, not just for himself, but to find some semblance of peace in a world that had taken so much from him.

Charlie skillfully deceived the CIA with his clever disguises and fake identities, which enabled him to move around undetected and eliminate many terrorists. This is why Bear holds Charlie in high regard and acknowledges his abilities. In fact, there may be a certain level of camaraderie between them that could potentially lead to them working together in the future.

Jon Bernthal’s Bear Saves Charlie’s Soul

Bear Is Like a Punisher Who Advises on Letting Rage & Grief Go

Charlie left viewers in awe as he followed Bear’s guiding principles, not literally by his side but spiritually connected. Instead of destroying the boat with the remaining villains on board, he seized control of the navigation system, obtained a confession, and guided the ship to the authorities. The Finnish naval forces then apprehended everyone on board. Charlie heeded Bear’s powerful advice: Sarah wouldn’t want her husband transforming into a vengeful man consumed by anger.

Bear wished for Charlie to salvage his virtues, discover inner strength, and recover from the corruption; as Charlie continued with his killing, Bear felt a deep sadness sink in. He feared vengeance would corrupt and consume Charlie if he carried out his quest violently. However, Charlie proves that he remains a noble man by doing so, demonstrating this to his trainer, Laurence Fishburne’s character, Henderson.

In a fitting scenario, Bear could resemble a character like Frank in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, should he choose to set aside his anger and suffering. If given the opportunity, Frank might guide upcoming heroes or offer beneficial strategies to fellow vigilantes. However, as depicted in Season 1 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” Frank’s thirst for vengeance remains unquenched. He continues to relentlessly pursue and eliminate criminals. His rage stems from his time as a Marine, coupled with the inability to come to terms with how villains took the lives of his family.

The Amateur Critical Reception

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can envision a potential scenario where Marvel Studios might present a “What If…?” tale featuring a more compassionate and law-abiding Punisher, akin to the character Bear. For now, though, fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming Punisher TV Special, confident that Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle will continue to embody an enraged force intent on eradicating scoundrels like Kingpin and preserving cityscapes such as New York from their malicious influence.

The Amateur is now in theaters.
