NCIS Drops Biggest LaRoche Twist Yet, With Shocking Gibbs Cameos for McGee

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Irreconcilable Differences” are ahead!

Season 22 of NCIS concluded its premiere in October, introducing the long-running mystery of Gabriel LaRoche. Special Agent Timothy McGee has been increasingly suspicious of the new NCIS Deputy Director, and recent episodes have seen him growing more resolved to unmask LaRoche as a traitor. However, the most recent episode from the 2025 TV schedule has brought a significant twist to the LaRoche saga. Moreover, these new revelations have also triggered some striking flashbacks for McGee of his previous boss, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

What We Learned About Gabriel LaRoche In This NCIS Episode

In the “Killer Instinct” incident, McGee became convinced that LaRoche was up to no good due to certain events. The latest episode, titled “After the Storm,” concluded with Director Vance granting McGee access to an unpublished DOJ IG report for potential evidence in his case. Unfortunately, as revealed early on in “Irreconcilable Differences,” the report didn’t yield any helpful information for McGee. He shared this disappointment with Nick Torres and Jessica Knight.

Due to McGee having not slept for several days (details will be explained later), Alden Parker chose to send him home. However, before McGee could pick up some food to take back to his family, he spotted LaRoche leaving the parking lot without his security escort. Consequently, McGee trailed LaRoche to different locations, and eventually, their path led them to an abandoned power plant. There, McGee observed LaRoche firing a gun at a man.

Paramount Plus offers access to shows like NCIS, Yellowstone’s 1883, The Good Fight, and live sports including NFL and UEFA for as low as $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. You can choose the Essential plan with ads, or upgrade to the Premium plan for an ad-free experience and double the catalog with Showtime for just $12.99 per month. Check it out here!

As McGee pursued LaRoche, he was unfortunately struck by a vehicle. By the time others arrived, the body that LaRoche had allegedly shot could not be found, and no physical evidence remained. This led to speculation that McGee might have fabricated or exaggerated the events, and matters worsened when Inspector General Regina Ward appeared to investigate an official complaint against our determined hero. It’s not difficult to guess who filed it, but I won’t count your first two guesses.

Over time, things began to unravel for McGee as he discovered that LaRoche was implicated in the theft of a party supplies truck carrying advanced US Navy guns capable of neutralizing remote signals. This heist resulted in the loss of millions from the truck, which was secretly transporting goods for the Nexus Cartel. Suspecting LaRoche’s connections to the cartel and his need for funds to escape the country, McGee drew this conclusion. Later, the body of the man LaRoche had shot was found, and surveillance footage showed LaRoche transferring evidence from NCIS into a van, presumably to move it to an undisclosed location.

It seems clear that Gabriel LaRoche is now being portrayed as a character with questionable intentions. This conclusion arises due to an incident involving McGee, who chose to confront LaRoche instead of being questioned further by Regina Ward. In this encounter, LaRoche killed one of the party truck thieves in self-defense, or so it appears, as another man was aiming a gun at McGee intending harm. However, McGee was injured during this altercation and when the team arrived to support him, they found an SD card on the deceased. In a surprising turn of events, LaRoche denied any involvement for monetary gain and instead hinted at revealing the truth about the situation.

How Gibbs Impacted McGee In This NCIS Episode

Setting aside the enigma of LaRoche for a brief moment, let’s discuss how Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who hasn’t appeared on NCIS since early Season 19, played a role in this episode. At the outset of “Irreconcilable Differences,” an individual was spotted descending into a very recognizable basement, clad in a USMC hoodie and sipping bourbon from a jar that once held screws. Now, you might be wondering if Mark Harmon has made his long-awaited comeback to NCIS?

Instead of it being Timothy McGee, the one lounging in the old workplace, there was a fantasy scenario where he was found in the boss’ former residence. This imaginary setup encompassed a postcard from Alaska (as depicted in the first episode of NCIS: Origins) and a completed boat bearing the name Tim. Regrettably, when Gabriel LaRoche descended into the basement and fired at McGee, it was revealed that this was merely a dream conjured up by Sean Murray’s character as he sat wearily at his desk. At a later stage in the episode, McGee even fantasized about getting into Gibbs’ pickup truck instead of his own car.

Could these dreams or hallucinations be hinting at the possibility of Mark Harmon reprising the role of Gibbs in the near future? It’s a bit of a reach, but it would certainly add an interesting twist if the Season 22 finale explored this idea more substantially, moving beyond Knight’s casual analysis. Torres even shared that he had a dream involving his own “Gibbs basement,” where Harmon’s character offered him a virgin Piña Colada and advised him not to slouch.

Regarding LaRoche, it seems the Season 22 finale of NCIS might unveil all the long-awaited answers concerning him. There’s also a chance this storyline could carry over into the start of the following season. Don’t miss it next week to discover the truth!
