Gary Oldman Admits to Being Drunk and Apologizing to Demi Moore on ‘Scarlet Letter’ Set

Gary Oldman has played a fair few drunks in his time, from Churchill to Jackson Lamb.

However, it’s been disclosed that the Academy Award laureate previously grappled with an alcohol issue, leading to destructive behavior during filming for A Scarlet Letter alongside Demi Moore.

In the 1995 romantic movie, the actress who won an Oscar (now aged 67) portrayed Arthur Dimmesdale, sharing the screen with Demi Moore (currently 62 years old).

Speaking about his on-set experiences, he disclosed that he needed to apologize to Demi during that period.

In a conversation with Radio Times this week, he expressed his viewpoint as follows: ‘It’s most unfortunate to instill feelings of letdown.’

During the production of “The Scarlet Letter,” I worked alongside Demi Moore. At various points throughout filming, I struggled with occasional periods of heavy drinking. Towards the final stages of my drinking habit, I found myself thinking, “Should I continue down this path…

In a deeply troubling state, I found myself overindulging during lunchtime hours. This action proved incredibly damaging. Upon returning to work for a significant scene, I managed to push through it.

You might not have noticed, but I was rather intoxicated. The following day, I told her, ‘I’m truly sorry, I imagine you can’t stand me.’

I felt embarrassed realizing my lack of professionalism. She then reassured me, saying, “I don’t dislike you. It’s fine. I’m merely upset.

Gary was arrested in 1991 for drunk driving and in 1994 checked himself into rehab.

Lately, when discussing his struggle with addiction, he’s confessed to having a condition similar to perspiring alcohol (vodka sweats) and drinking such excessive amounts that his tongue turned dark.

Over these past 27 years, I’ve managed to maintain my sobriety, a feat I owe in large part to the support I’ve found within Alcoholics Anonymous. They’ve been instrumental in my journey towards overcoming my addiction.

Oldman won an Oscar for his role in Darkest Hour, where he portrayed Winston Churchill.

He admitted to Radio Times that this role was the most daring decision he had ever made, and afterward, his perspective on Churchill shifted significantly.

‘It worked out OK, but I’d turned it down half a dozen times,’ he said.

He penned down a significant amount of text, surpassing the combined works of Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Approximately 50 books bear his name, along with numerous renowned speeches. What’s more, he wasn’t just limited to these major works; he also wrote everyday documents like memos and letters.

I hold immense respect for an individual who managed to pen all that writing, create those paintings, defy the Nazis, and consume such a substantial amount of cigars and alcohol throughout their lifetime. Impressive indeed!

In the past few seasons, Oldman has portrayed Jackson Lamb, a disheveled, alcoholic ex-MI5 agent on Apple TV’s Slow Horses. He mentioned that discussions for season six are underway, with season five set to premiere this summer.

‘Obviously, if they want to keep us on the air and we’ve got an audience,’ he said.

‘It’s Apple writing the cheques. We’re working on writing number six.

Currently, it’s uncertain if we’ll complete all of them, but so far, we’ve shot five, and there are a total of eight books in the series.

It comes after Gary recently praised his former co-star Demi for her recent success.

In an update shared earlier this year, I expressed to The Post that it had been some time since our last interaction, but a recent encounter brought us back in touch. Allow me to say, she truly embodies the essence of remarkable individuals – Demi, indeed. Her unique charm and grace make her exceptionally special.

He continued: ‘I couldn’t be happier for her in this moment with this film and this role.

‘I think it’s such a wonderful thing. And she’s loving it and really riding the wave.’

This year, Demi has truly shone during the award season with her exceptional portrayal of Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance. She’s garnered two prestigious awards – a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for Best Actress – for this role in the horror genre.

At the 2025 SAG Awards, Gary received a nomination for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series, recognition he earned for his part in the Apple TV+ suspenseful series titled Slow Horses.

Nevertheless, Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada was awarded the prize for his outstanding portrayal in the TV show titled Shōgun.
