Gilmore Girls creator’s “delightful” new show jumps straight into streaming chart
The comedy-drama titled “Étoile,” crafted by the mind behind “Gilmore Girls,” Amy Sherman-Palladino, has swiftly made its debut on the streaming rankings since its premiere.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say this Prime Video show chronicles the journeys of two globally acclaimed ballet troupes, one nestled in the heart of New York City and the other in Paris, as they grapple with severe financial difficulties. Their innovative strategy to bounce back hinges on a unique swap of their star dancers.
Developed by Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel, Étoile features Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as the top figures in the New York Metropolitan Ballet and Le Ballet National, respectively. Gideon Glick and Lou de Laâge take on roles of dancers who find themselves displaced.

TIME Magazine
Étoile embodies the signature style of a Sherman-Palladino production – it’s an enjoyable series to follow… Moreover, it serves as a charming, yet sometimes disorganized, example.
Slate
Star is far from being dull. Although it’s not flawless, I must say I appreciated the unexpected dance scenes and the quirky characters that enliven the narrative.
The Guardian
Star is… quite satisfactory. It keeps me occupied, but it feels like each individual is performing in a unique production, and the tone fluctuates wildly between various possibilities.”
Or,
“Star isn’t bad. It manages to fill my time. However, it seems as though everyone is acting in a different play, and the mood varies unpredictably across a wide spectrum.
AV Club
Utilizing authentic skills lends credibility to the numerous dance scenes found in the dramedy, which are skillfully directed by choreographer Marguerite Derricks.
The Hollywood Reporter
The film is nimble and full of heart, reflecting the affection and respect its creators have for the world. It features compelling lead performances by Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg, along with an impressive English-language debut from Lou de Laâge.
The Daily Beast
As a passionate admirer, I must say that Amy Sherman-Palladino’s ability to interweave delicate, feminine charm with ruthless intensity has never been more evident than in her latest Prime Video series, Étoile. This grandiose production, while perhaps the most complex and less immediately approachable among her works, could very well be her most intimate foray into television storytelling yet.
Étoile is streaming on Prime Video.
