Overwatch 3? Reports hint at Overwatch mobile game in development
The report noted that local distributors are calling this mobile title “Overwatch 3.”
As per a report from South Korea’s MTN news site, it appears that Blizzard Entertainment is developing a mobile version of their popular Overwatch franchise. Here are some details that have been revealed about the upcoming Overwatch mobile game.
Overwatch mobile game
As per the MTN report released on April 28th, the upcoming mobile game is expected to be a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), often referred to colloquially as an “Overwatch 3” type of game. Domestic gaming companies are using this name in reference to its similarity to the popular game series, Overwatch.
I, as a gaming enthusiast, came across a highly regarded post from the OWCavalry account on platform X. This post garnered attention due to its backing by numerous community members. In this post, OWCavalry drew an intriguing comparison between the mobile game we’re discussing and the League of Legends: Wild Rift – a comparison that got me pretty excited!
It’s not a new piece of information that there have been reports about an Overwatch mobile game. In fact, back in 2024, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier disclosed in his book that such a game is being developed.
In his article titled “The Evolution, Decline, and Prospects of Blizzard Entertainment,” Schreier disclosed that Walter Kong served as head of the Overwatch team and was responsible for managing routine hero launches, developing content for Overwatch 2, and initiating new projects such as a mobile adaptation of the franchise.
The content in this book is reportedly derived from over 300 interviews conducted with both current and past employees of Blizzard Entertainment, as indicated on its Amazon page.
An Overwatch 2 MOBA?
As for what an Overwatch 2 mobile game in the MOBA genre might resemble, no specific details have been shared at the point when this article was released. Some players, like mjHushpuppy, have suggested that a MOBA could share similarities with Blizzard Entertainment’s Heroes of the Storm game.
Heroes of the Storm is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that brings characters like Hanzo, Genji, Zarya, and D.Va from the Overwatch universe together with heroes hailing from other popular franchises such as StarCraft, World of Warcraft, and Diablo.
