From its playful beginnings, the series unexpectedly takes a darker turn, as the lives of the heroines become precarious and hang in the balance. Later, the narrative transforms into an intense battle royale, with the girls engaging in fierce combat against one another, each vying to be the sole survivor.

In contrast, the final episode of the show contradicts all prior developments when Mai discovers a method to resurrect every woman who perished in battle. Some viewers are thrilled by this turn of events, cheering as these women combine forces to defeat the true antagonists of the anime. If the series hadn’t chosen to conclude with the “bad ending” from the visual novel style, everything would have turned out well. The “Nice Boat” ending of School Days is particularly disturbing as it depicts the main character Makoto being stabbed by one of his girlfriends and then beheaded. His corpse is carried onto a boat while the other girlfriend continues to speak with him, leaving viewers feeling uneasy by the end.

This dynamic was successful, leaving fans captivated and admiring Studio Trigger for crafting what seemed like a modern mecha masterpiece. However, the plot took an unexpected turn with the introduction of extraterrestrial beings.

In episode 20, it’s revealed that the children had been secretly working for the evil VIRM aliens all along, a twist that feels surprisingly out of context. The series then spirals out of control, with its power dynamics escalating at an unprecedented pace. Despite its potential, “Darling in the Franxx” hasn’t garnered the recognition it deserves nowadays.

Fans of the series choose to ignore this plot twist because it’s so frustrating. The Anarchy sisters, who seemed angelic throughout the series, spent an entire season working towards re-entering heaven, but a shocking revelation at the end completely overturned everything viewers believed. In the latest mission’s aftermath, Stocking unveiled her true identity as a demon, then mercilessly killed Panty, dismembering her body into 666 pieces and subsequently aiding the villains in executing their following scheme.

The plot twist isn’t entirely unexpected, but it’s disappointing as a conclusion for a show fans had been enjoying up until then. Originally, there was supposed to be a Season 2 to continue the story, but due to the creative team from Studio GAINAX departing, it proved challenging. Fingers crossed that they can revise this plot twist when the series returns for its second season in summer 2025.

At the culmination of Code Geass, the anime doesn’t merely veer out of control — it collides head-on with another runaway train. Throughout the series, Lelouch has been relentlessly pursuing one objective: seeking revenge on his family for the enigmatic demise of his mother, Marianne. This driving force is what hooks viewers, so any shift that detracts from this narrative thread may risk estranging viewers from the show.

Initially, it was believed that Marianne had been murdered. However, Sunrise disclosed later on that her death wasn’t a murder at all. Instead, it was part of an intricate scheme she and Emperor Charles had devised, called Ragnarok, to bring about unity among humans. Consequently, Lelouch finds himself in the same predicament as he has with his other family members – turning against her. This revelation leaves the rest of the series feeling empty, as if everything that follows lacks significance.
