You Won’t Believe The True Meaning of Curtis and Viper
In the HBO series, “The Last of Us,” a recurring Easter egg in Season 2 Episode 3 was “Curtis and Viper.” This isn’t the first time this fictional duo has been referenced within “The Last of Us.” The original mention can be traced back to the very first episode of Season 1.
In the original text, “Curtis and Viper” are first introduced in “The Last of Us Part 2,” during a conversation between Ellie and Dina where Ellie mentions her intention to watch an action movie with Joel featuring these characters. In the HBO series, “Curtis and Viper” share some similarities but their roles develop more extensively, particularly in Season 2 Episode 3.
What is ‘Curtis and Viper’ in The Last of Us Show?
For the first time, Curtis and Viper make an appearance in Episode 1 of The Last of Us. This happens when Joel’s daughter Sarah borrows the DVD of Curtis and Viper 2 from their neighbors, the Adlers. Later in the evening, after Joel returns home from work, they decide to watch the movie together. However, their peaceful movie night is interrupted as it takes place on the very night when the Cordyceps virus starts its devastating spread.
In Season 2 Episode 1 of “The Last of Us”, Dina (Isabela Merced) mentions that Ellie (Bella Ramsey) resembles Curtis and Viper, in her attire, when she brings up the fictional film again. She attempts to ease the tension between Joel and Ellie by proposing a movie night for Ellie to spend with Joel, aiming to bridge their gap.
Later during their patrol briefing, Jesse indirectly echoes Dina’s reference to “Curtis and Viper” made earlier, hinting that Joel may have shared his beloved action movie series with the broader community of Jackson.
Why Dina Says ‘Curtis and Viper’ In Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3
In the gripping second season of “The Last of Us,” I found myself once more entwined with the enigmatic duo, Curtis and Viper. As we ventured into the heart of Seattle in Episode 3, Dina reminded us of their shared past. Their presence loomed large as our mission became clear: track down Abby for the harm she inflicted on Joel.
During their travel, the pair discusses their fascination with popular culture to keep themselves entertained. As they approach a sign suggesting they’re nearly in Seattle, Dina remarks how peaceful it is, and Ellie replies, “Indeed, it’s unusually tranquil.
Later on, Dina queries, “Is it Curtis or Viper you’re referring to?” This suggests that Ellie is echoing a quote from one of the films. Ellie responds, “Both, in all four movies.
Shortly following this, Ellie and Dina arrive in Seattle. Although they encountered bodies throughout their journey, the city remains surprisingly tranquil. Dina interprets this as a sign that there might be fewer W.L.F. members (often referred to as “wolves”) than initially assumed. Ellie hints ominously that “there’s about to be significantly fewer,” which Dina takes to be a quote from Curtis and Viper.
Dina: “Guess there aren’t that many wolves.”
Ellie: “There’s about to be a whole lot less.”
Dina: “Curtis or Viper?”
Ellie: “What? No. That was just me. I was trying to sound like a badass.”
In the fictional world of “The Last of Us”, Curtis and Viper are characters from an action movie series that has a profound impact on the characters Ellie and Dina, particularly since Joel, who they both care for deeply, was fond of this franchise. Throughout Episode 3, their repeated mentions of Curtis and Viper serve as a tribute to Joel’s memory. Moreover, this shared reference acts as a connector between Ellie and Dina, deepening their bond and creating a unique shared experience.
