Slugfest
The initial season of the television series, Suits LA, has had its share of highs and lows. However, Episode 10 truly shines as a standout, not just for this show but also within TV drama in general. Entitled “Slugfest,” this episode presents the most compelling flashback narrative yet, revealing how past conflicts between Ted Black and Stuart Lane have shaped their current relationship. The pair engage in heated arguments from their past, while Stuart simultaneously brings his prestigious David Bowie case to a close in the present. Crucial characters beloved by fans are utilized effectively, and romantic connections are put to the test. This episode serves as an excellent platform for character development, particularly focusing on Stuart’s growth. Here’s a recap of the most thrilling episode so far from Suits LA.
Stuart and Ted Compete in College
The story opens with a reminiscence at Columbia Law School back in 2005. Ted and Stuart are in the Dean’s office, anticipating who will be declared as the top student. However, for the first time ever, they both are found to be on top. So, they must engage in a mock trial competition to determine their relative abilities. The case revolves around a father and his two sons, all of whom tested positive for alcohol after a car accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian and putting the younger son into a coma. Ted and Stuart can select actors for this trial and are allowed to alter one detail in the scenario to mimic real-life unpredictability. In true Ted style, he claims the prosecutor’s role.
In their apartment, Ted proposes that Eddie should take on the role of the younger son for the upcoming case as he’d appreciate being involved. Stuart consents and adds that he gets to decide the remaining roles. He then asks his girlfriend, Helen, to play the therapist, considering the significance of the mock trial for Stuart. During the mock trial, an unexpected twist unfolds when Stuart selects Ted’s father as the first witness, despite this being his fourth appearance without a designated name. This action angers Ted, realizing that Stuart did it deliberately to provoke him. As a form of retaliation, Ted takes advantage of his power to arrest the father, making him the new defendant instead.
After the court session ends each day, Ted remains displeased with Stuart. Despite prioritizing the trial over relationships, Stuart is underestimating a seasoned lawyer like Ted. The following day, during Helen’s testimony, Ted poses a personal question to her, suggesting that due to her plans to marry Stuart, she may be willing to lie in order to help him win the case. This action causes Helen to leave the courtroom angrily, and Stuart follows suit. When he returns to the courtroom later, Stuart employs a clever tactic by bringing up the topic of his younger brother recovering from a coma using some change he found as a way to redirect the attention away from the controversy caused earlier.
In a different phrasing, here is the story: Ted is becoming increasingly angry because he doesn’t want Eddie to testify. Stuart suggests that Ted could prevent it, but only if Ted admits defeat. Off-screen, Ted confides in Helen about Stuart’s strategy. Helen then advises Stuart not to proceed as Eddie might not grasp the distinction between court proceedings and real life. Initially hesitant, Stuart reveals his past struggles with being the best. In the courtroom, Stuart chooses not to question Eddie, instead closing his case. Ted, touched by Stuart’s actions, decides to withdraw his own case, declaring that “justice is more crucial than victory,” a sentiment that continues to bother Stuart in the present day.
Stuart Worries That He Killed a Woman
For some time now, Stuart has been portraying a formidable figure in the studio named David Bowie. Recently, after Stuart shared details about a case with David, a woman involved, Janet Fields, was tragically murdered. Prior to his court appearance, Stuart confides in Helen, who is now his spouse. She senses his distress and Stuart expresses concern that Isaac Adani, the prosecutor, suspects he might have unwittingly provided information leading to the woman’s death.
In the courtroom, Stuart argues that the case shouldn’t proceed to trial since he possesses proof that David Bowie was in another location when Janet Fields passed away. There’s a heated exchange between Stuart and Erica, who defends Greg, a person mentioned on the tape under dispute. However, Stuart eventually presents the tape as evidence in court. The exchange continues, but ultimately Greg admits that David took the sex tape for blackmail purposes, as it contained footage of Greg engaging in an intimate act with a studio head’s wife. As a result, the charges against David are dropped.
In his office, Stuart is still troubled by Isaac’s words. Samantha walks in, and Stuart confides in her that he suspects the security footage might have been manipulated. Samantha suggests Stuart accept the victory, but Helen arrives, concerned because Stuart was late home for two hours. Later on, Stuart decides to discuss the case with Isaac at his house. However, David Bowie blocks Stuart’s entry, confessing to murdering Janet and threatening Stuart’s life as well.
In response to Helen’s request for surveillance on Stuart, Ted stepped out from concealment, disclosing that he had been documenting the situation. This revelation prompted David to withdraw. On several instances, Harvey Specter has nicknamed Ted as “Batman”, but this was the first time Ted truly embodied the character, even appearing in a completely black ensemble. Previously, I lamented about the disheartening portrayal of unjust actions by the main characters in Suits LA. However, observing Ted and Stuart’s strong commitment to justice this episode offers a refreshing shift in perspective.
Relationship Drama Heats Up
Amidst the intriguing tales revolving around the Stuarts, “Slugfest” adds an element of emotional complexity to the characters’ love lives. I found myself caught up in Ted’s and Amanda’s story, particularly when Amanda expressed that their relationship was purely platonic. Though a sense of disappointment washed over me, I encouraged her to take on a high-profile case to kickstart her new promotion.
Intriguingly, Amanda signed a young, ambitious star who sought emancipation from her domineering father as her client. Upon sharing the update with Ted, he expressed regret for his earlier outburst, and there seemed to be lingering hints of romantic feelings between them.
Following Stuart’s disclosure of confidential information, Erica confronts Rick about his professional incompetence. The argument escalates significantly, leading to a heated exchange. In the heat of the moment, Rick suggests that since Erica doesn’t want a formal relationship with him, she should keep her distance. Disappointed, Erica retreats to her office and reminisces about their shared memories through old photographs. Meanwhile, Rick heads home and finds solace in playing his guitar. It appears that their friendship may be on the rocks for the remainder of the season…
