Toy Story fans react to cast replacement for new movie

Toy Story fans have reacted to the news of a cast replacement for the upcoming fifth movie.

In the upcoming film, “Toy Story 5”, we’ll see the return of the character Combat Carl, who was previously seen in “Toy Story 4” and the short movie titled “Toy Story of Terror!”. Notably, Carl Weathers provided his voice for this character.

Last year’s tragic death of the actors portraying Combat Carl in Rocky and The Mandalorian required a replacement, and it was Ernie Hudson, known for his roles in Ghostbusters and Grace and Frankie, who was selected for the part.

Supporters of the Disney/Pixar show are pleased with the casting choice, as they believe Hudson is capable of filling in for Weathers in the role.

What a great pick! This character is often overlooked yet truly shone in the movie ‘Toy Story of Terror’,” stated a Reddit user.

As another fan, I’d say it’s not a shabby replacement they made. And honestly, Ernie truly earned this success; he’s simply amazing!

Another fan expressed their thoughts: “I believe many wouldn’t have minded if this character was missing, but I think the new portrayal is good. To me, it’s refreshing to see Ernie Hudson back in action and employed.

After the debut of “Toy Story 4”, it’s been unfortunate to learn that Estelle Harris, the voice behind Mrs. Potato Head, has also passed away. Interestingly, Don Rickles, the actor who played Mr. Potato Head, had already passed before the release of the fourth movie; unused audio from his archives was instead utilized in the film.

It’s still undecided if the Potato Head characters will be replaced, if the filmmakers will use old recordings instead, write the characters without dialogue, or make them silent in the upcoming movie.

The specifics of the storyline for Toy Story 5 remain elusive, but it appears that the toys will uncover the fact that technology has started dominating playtime.

In June 2026, the fifth installment of Toy Story will hit the big screens. You can catch up on the previous four movies and shorts on Disney+’s streaming platform.

The debut print issue of Digital Spy’s magazine titled “British Comedy Legends” is available for purchase! Grab your copy from newsstands or online at a price of £7.99.
