Another ’90s horror classic is getting a “modern era” reboot

Another ‘90s horror classic is getting a “modern era” reboot, with a writer and producer on board.

1998’s “Urban Legend” featured Jared Leto (from “Suicide Squad”), Joshua Jackson (“Dawson’s Creek”), Michael Rosenbaum (“Smallville”), and Tara Reid (“Sharknado”) in its cast.

A movie, similar to the success of “Scream,” focuses on a series of gruesome killings happening at a college campus, which appear to be influenced by popular urban folklore. The protagonist in this story happens to be a journalist, and one of the characters serves as comic relief, portraying a police officer.

Besides its primary youthful actors, the movie Urban Legend boasts the appearances of Robert Englund, known for A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Brad Dourif from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, both in secondary roles.

Contrary to some unfavorable criticism, the movie raked in an impressive sum of over $70 million at the box office against a production budget of just $14 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s Screen Gems studio is currently working on drafting a fresh adaptation. Shanrah Wakefield is writing the script, while Gary Dauberman, known for his work on the Until Dawn film, will be overseeing production.

The article mentions that the upcoming reboot is intended as a contemporary interpretation, exploring how an old tale might manifest and propagate in our world dominated by digital data and social networks.

Discussing the game “Until Dawn“, its film adaptation for the big screen was recently unveiled. At first glance, it seemed quite promising, but upon closer scrutiny, critical reviews have presented a more varied opinion.

Meanwhile, Jared Leto will soon be seen in the sci-fi sequel Tron: Ares, which is out in October.

The original Urban Legend can be watched now on Netflix.

The inaugural print edition of Digital Spy’s magazine titled “British Comedy Legends” is available for purchase! Grab a copy from your local newsagent or buy it online for just £7.99.
