Grave of the Fireflies: Heart-Wrenching Classic Returns to US Theaters This Fall
Besides creating captivating worlds in movies such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, Studio Ghibli is equally known for evoking deep emotions. Movies like Princess Mononoke and From Up on Poppy Hill are among their most emotional works. However, fans of the studio all concur that its most heart-wrenching film undeniably is Grave of the Fireflies. In a bid to make viewers cry again this year, Ghibli plans to re-release Grave of the Fireflies in US cinemas.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled that this year’s Ghibli Fest celebrations include the theatrical re-release of the heart-wrenching classic, “Grave of the Fireflies.” This annual event by GKIDS gives us a chance to relish some of Studio Ghibli’s most cherished and overlooked films on the big screen once more. Among this year’s lineup, “Grave of the Fireflies” stands out, and it will be gracing select US theaters from August 10 to August 12.
2021’s Ghibli Festival, taking place from May to October, will feature a theatrical re-release of eight Studio Ghibli films. The lineup has been announced, with some unexpected inclusions and exclusions. Fan favorites like “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, “Spirited Away”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”, and “My Neighbor Totoro” are part of the festival. This year also features less-often screened films such as “The Secret World of Arriety”, “Ponyo”, “The Boy and the Heron”, and, notably, “Grave of the Fireflies”.
Nearly every Studio Ghibli film includes a heart-wrenching moment, yet Grave of the Fireflies is relentless in its emotional turmoil and suffering. The movie unfolds during World War II, focusing on Seita and his younger sibling Setsuko after their mother perishes in an air raid. With no other options, they embark on a challenging quest to find shelter and escape the destruction of war.
Will Hayao Miyazaki Direct Another Movie?
This year’s Ghibli Fest is a testament to the brilliant mind of Hayao Miyazaki, who has been instrumental in creating every film shown. As the founder and director of Studio Ghibli, he has directed 12 of its movies, while also writing and producing many others. In 2023, Miyazaki released what was said to be his final movie, “The Boy and the Heron“. However, it seems that the industrious director may not be quite ready to retire from animation just yet.
Last May, Goro Miyazaki, Hayao’s son, hinted that his father might be working on another movie. “He is indeed creating something now,” Goro mentioned about his father’s upcoming projects. “Whether it will actually be for his next film or not, it seems to lean towards an action-adventure style, with a nostalgic feel reminiscent of earlier times.” Notably, this style fits the genre of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved productions. Officially, there has been no announcement about Hayao Miyazaki’s next movie (if one is indeed in production). However, after Goro’s hint, fans are eagerly anticipating a potential final masterpiece from the legendary director.
